COLES, Mrs. Berneice L.-age 89, of Flint, passed away Saturday, June 11, 2016 at Fostrian Manor, Flushing, MI. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, June 15, 2016 with a 10:30 am family hour at Canaan Baptist Church 910 E. Gillespie Ave. Flint, MI 48505. Rev. Brian Coles officiating. Host Pastor, Rev. Charles Roots. The final resting place for Mrs. Coles will be Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, MI. Calling hours are 12:00 noon - 7:00 pm Tuesday, June 14, 2016 with family present to receive friends from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Sheldon T. Banks Funeral Chapel.
Bernice Lucille Henderson Coles was born on November 28, 1926 to Willman Anderson and Gertrude Trucker; and has been a lifelong resident of Flint, Michigan. Mrs. Coles lost her biological mother at an early age, and was reared by her great-aunt, Elizabeth Wilkerson, who was fondly referred to as “Honey Bunch”.
She has been an active member of the Canaan Baptist Church for over 77 years. Sister Coles served the church in many capacities to include: Sunday School Teacher, President of the Junior Usher Board, Church Announcement Clerk, and former President of the original Mothers’ Club. She also served as Vice President of the General Missionary Society, and held the offices of President and Treasurer of the Catherine Byrd-Dorcas Circle.
Educated in Flint Public Schools, she attended Parkland Elementary School, Emerson Junior High School, and Flint Northern Senior High School; where she graduated with honors in the class of 1944.
On June 1, 1946, Bernice married Commodore Coles, Sr. They were wedded 67 years in holy matrimony, and were blessed with five children. As of this date, the Coles Family legacy is now entrusted to three generations of their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Left with lasting memories are her children: Commodore Coles, Jr. (Angelene) of Columbia, SC, Dr. Carolyn E. Coles Benton of Buffalo NY, Pamela G. Coles of Flint, MI/Charlotte, NC, Rev. Brian T. Coles (Valerie) of San Antonio, TX, and Bruce L. Coles of Flint, MI.
Also, keepers of her memory are eight grandchildren: William G. Coles of Flint, MI, Michelle D. Wiggins (Edrin) of Columbia, SC, Taheera N. Benton of New York, NY, Jacquelynn Coles of Lowell, MA, Michael D. B. Coles, Clinton L. Byrd, III, and Tia S. Coles—all of Flint MI, and Louis C. Benton, II (Courtney) of Buffalo, NY. The youngest of her legacy bearers are her five great-grandchildren: Marcus T. McNear, Jr., Clinton L. Byrd, IV, Malachi J. Byrd, James Benton, and Hannah M. Wiggins.
Additional surviving family members and cherished friends are: Brother, Clarence Henderson, niece, Vivian Jones and a host of nieces and nephews all of Flint, MI, sisters-in-law, Helen Coles of Detroit, MI and Rose Coles Jones of Flint, MI, dearest friends: Laura Brandon of Franklin, OH, Thelma Murry of Louisville, KY, Florence Moore, Ola Cummings, Bessie Jackson, and Ethel Mae Johnson—all of Flint, MI, and Barbara Watkins of Flushing, MI.
Along with her beloved parents, Mrs. Bernice Lucille Henderson Coles was preceded in death by her late husband, Commodore Coles, Sr.; granddaughter, Charlotte L. Byrd; son-in-law, Louis C. Benton; sisters, Selena “Tiny” Jones, Lois “Juanita” Abernathy, Mildred Henderson, and Cecilia Henderson; her brothers, Cornelius Henderson, John David Henderson, Horace Henderson, Hazel Henderson; and other relatives.
May God’s grace and peace be with you; and may He forever bless you as He has blessed us with unconditional love, and the heart’s memory of our beloved family member.
