Spencer “Spence” Alford of Atlas, Michigan died on Tuesday, June 13, 2017. He was born on November 18, 1929 in Delton, Wisconsin to Harry and Norma (Grover) Alford. He had an older sister, Charlotte and a younger brother, Orvel (Red). He grew up in the Lake Delton/Wisconsin Dells area and earned his journeyman’s card as a Master Carpenter in 1947. He was married to Joyce Hacker on May 29, 1950. They moved to Grand Blanc in the winter of 1954, and to Atlas in 1957. They had seven children: Barry (Lucia), Carol Cross (Mickey), Bruce (Lisa), Mike (Roxanne), Wendy Rao (Peru), Mary Hoover (Larry), and Kelly, all of whom graduated from Goodrich High School. He was a devoted husband and father and well known in the community. Along with his wife, he was a founding member of St. Mark’s parish in Goodrich and a member of the Saint Joseph’s Guild. Spencer was best known in the area for his work on numerous local landmarks, including the new terminal at Bishop Airport and Autoworld. Some of his favorite projects were the homes he and his brother built that were designed by architects trained at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Farm School. He is survived by his seven children, 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He is proceeded in death by his parents, siblings and his wife, Joyce. The family wants to send special thanks to Dr. Jim Walter. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10am on Friday, June 16, 2017 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 7296 Gale Rd., Grand Blanc with Father Bob McGraw and Deacon Ron Kenney celebrating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2017 from 3-8pm with a Vigil of Remembrance at Hill Funeral Home, 11723 S. Saginaw St., Grand Blanc. The family will also receive visitors one hour prior to the service, beginning at 9am on Friday. Those desiring may make a memorial contribution to Goodrich Area Schools to place a memorial bench in Spencer’s name.
