Larry Edwin Holmes Sr., known affectionately as Larry to his friends and family, passed away peacefully at his home in Durand on March 8, 2025, at the age of 91. The family will receive friends at the Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, from 4:00pm - 8:00pm. Funeral service to honor and celebrate his life will be held on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at 11:00am with 10:00am visitation prior to service at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel. Burial will follow immediately after at Greenwood Cemetery in Vernon.
Born in Flint, Michigan, on January 17, 1934 to the late Orr Warren and Gertrude (Dowde) Holmes, Larry's life was characterized by devotion to his family, a strong work ethic, and a love for the simple pleasures in life.
After graduating from Flint Central High School in 1953, Larry proudly served his country in the United States Marines until 1956. His dedication to service was a testament to his character, and it was during this time that he developed a resilience and discipline that would define his life. On April 25, 1956, Larry married the love of his life, June Rose Owens, in Walterboro, South Carolina. Their enduring partnership of 68 years was built on mutual respect, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to each other and their family.
Larry's professional life was spent at Fisher Body, where he dedicated 34 years before retiring in 1996. His colleagues knew him as a reliable and hardworking individual.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Larry was a man who found joy in life's simple pleasures. He had a passion for fixing cars, often spending hours tinkering under the hood, ensuring that every engine ran as smoothly as the day it was built. His love for the outdoors was evident to all who knew him, as he could frequently be found enjoying nature, whether bird watching or simply taking in the beauty of his surroundings with a cold Pepsi in hand.
Larry's legacy is carried on by his beloved spouse of 68 years, June, and their children, Angie (Jerry) Cullison, Lisa (Dave) Edwards, Larry Jr. (Tina) Holmes, and Jerry (Lorrie) Holmes. He was a cherished grandfather to Guy (Allison) Cullison, Scott Cullison, Michelle (Tom) Terrill, Heather (Adam) Bruno, Holly Sammons, Larry Holmes III, Jessica (Nick) Clark, and Buddy (Channing) Holmes. His role as a great-grandfather to Josie, Hayden, Troy, Dillon, Eric Jr., Kelsie, Hayley, Bradley, Charlotte, and Rhett brought him immense joy and pride.
Larry is also survived by his sister, Paula Zecchini, who will fondly remember her brother's warmth and humor. He was predeceased by his parents, Orr and Gertrude Holmes, his brother, Orr W. Holmes Jr., his sister-in-law, Gaynelle Holmes, and his brother-in-law, Steve Zecchini.
Larry's life was a testament to the values of family, hard work, and the importance of cherishing every moment. His presence was a comfort and his guidance a constant source of strength. He leaves behind a family that will continue to honor his memory by living out the lessons he taught through his example.
