RAU, Peter A. - Of Gladwin, formerly of Flushing, age 65, died after a short illness associated with cancer on August 19, 2015 at McLaren-Bay Region Hospital.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at St. Michael Catholic Church, 609 East Fifth Avenue, Flint, Father Tom Firestone officiating.
Visitation 1-8 p.m. Monday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road. Mr. Rau will be at the church from 10:30 a.m. Tuesday until the time of the Mass.
Pete was born in Flint, Michigan on July 28, 1950 and was a resident of Flint and Flushing until moving to Gladwin in 2001. In Gladwin, Pete enjoyed lake house life and was an active and beloved member of the community.
On April 16, 1971 he married Lori A. Heenan at St. Michael Catholic Church in Flint. He and Lori raised their sons, Brian and Wick, in Flushing, and they enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Pete was a proud Michigander and diehard fan of the Detroit Pistons and other Michigan sports teams.
Pete served his country as a U.S. Marine Corps Reservist and retired from General Motors after 33 years of dedicated service and proud United Auto Workers #659 membership.
During his retirement years, Pete took care of his boat and golf cart in Florida, and was affectionately known as “Park Ranger Pete” for all he did to help and take care of his friends and neighbors.
Pete was a kind and beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. His enthusiasm and loving care for all who he held close and all that he held dear were unmatched. He will be sorely missed by his many family members and friends. Surviving are wife, Lori; sons, Brian and Wick; granddaughter, Haley; brother, John and wife Judy, Fred and wife Marsha, Albert and wife Elva; sister, Ava Bennett.
In lieu of flowers, those desiring to a make contributions to a scholarship fund for Pete's granddaughter Haley may do so by contacting representatives of Swartz Funeral Home.
