“Big Tom” was born in Marquette, MI to William “Dud” and Eleanor Bernard on November 14, 1943. He was raised in Houghton with his five brothers and sisters, and excelled at nearly every sport. Tom graduated from Houghton High School in 1961. After briefly attending Michigan Tech University, Tom went on to graduate from Northern Michigan University with a degree in Business, in December 1967. He later went on to earn a Master’s Degree from Central Michigan University. Tom married Mary Ann LaJoye on November 26, 1966. A year later, they relocated their family to Flint, where Tom worked as a Labor Relations Representative for Buick for 36 years, retiring in 2004. Tom’s quick wit and intelligence made him a great storyteller. If you were in his company, chances are you were laughing. He enjoyed coaching his sons’ hockey teams, traveling to visit family, watching Lion’s football and Red Wing’s hockey, the occasional trip to a casino or horse track and driving a Buick. Tom was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

Thomas leaves behind many to miss him always. His loving wife of 46 years, Mary Ann; children, Julie (Chuck) Pearce, Tommy Bernard, Jr., Brent (Jennifer) Bernard; grandchildren, Colin, Allison, Ella, Sydney, Ava, Brennan; brothers, Bill (Ilene) Bernard, David (Marilyn) Bernard; brothers-in-law, Lorne Kany, Wayne (Barb) Peterson, Bud (Mary Jane) LaJoye, Clyde (Melody) LaJoye, A. James (Colleen) LaJoye, Joseph (Patti) LaJoye, Richard LaJoye; sisters-in-law, Judy Bernard, Jeanne (Scott) Seavoy, Kristine LaJoye, Sandy LaJoye, Nancy (Kevin) Cuncannan; many cousins, nieces, nephews and a lifetime of friends. He joins his parents, brother, Sam; sisters, Mary Ellen Kany and Emmy Peterson; sisters-in-law, Karen Bernard and Colleen Sinnaeve; brothers-in-law, Michael LaJoye, George Gedda, and Joseph Sinnaeve in heaven. What a reunion that must have been! Tom was a proud organ donor, donating his eyes upon his death. Tom’s family hopes that the recipient will be able to see the world with the same humor as he did.
