ANDERSON, JOANNE – Of Flint, age 97, died Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at The Oaks at Woodfield.
Private burial in Evergreen Cemetery.
Joanne was born in Port Clinton, Ohio on February 2, 1927, the daughter of Vernon and Adelyn (Beidelshies) Mealey. She married the love of her life, Don Anderson, on June 14, 1946 -- a marriage that lasted until Don's death in 1994.
Joanne overcame many hardships. She weighed two pounds at birth, and the attending physician stated, "She won't live." She grew up during the Great Depression. In the late 1930s, after her parents divorced, Joanne moved to Michigan with her mother. In 1951, she lost her first two children, ages 4 and 3, in a house fire while pregnant with her third.
Despite tragedy, Joanne remained a vibrant, loving person.
She was an active member and officer of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #151 and a community volunteer. She loved U of M football, Flint Generals hockey, Detroit Tigers baseball and was an avid fan of Elvis Presley.
Joanne spent many summers at the family cottage on Higgins Lake. She was a great cook and baker, and had a green thumb. For many years, she assisted her parents at their Flint-area business, Peck's Flowers.
Surviving are son, Jim (Anita) Anderson;
daughter, Judy Datz;
grandchildren, Dora (Brian), Jo Lynn (Rick), Craig, Emily, Kirk (Alex) and Addy (Kevin);
6 great-grandchildren;
nephew, Larry (Mary) Wright and her beloved pet, Dani.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; son, William, daughter, Nancy; son-in-law, Don Datz and special friend, Bud Blevins.
