SALAY, Emil L. – age 100, peacefully passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2015 in his home. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, April 16, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church, 746 S. Saginaw Street, Flint, Michigan with Rev. Paul Ytterock officiating. Following the service there will be a luncheon at the Masonic Temple. Burial will take place at Sunset Hills Cemetery at 3 p.m. Thursday. Visitation will be held Tuesday 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, 1480 E. Hill Road, Grand Blanc, Michigan and at church from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church or to the Humane Society of Genesee County. Mr. Salay, the youngest of seven children, was born in Pomona, California on May 8, 1914, the son of Emil and Mary (Putsko) Salay. In 1916 the family moved to Flint where his parents founded the Flint Sausage Works, Salay’s Incorporated. Mr. Salay served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Airborne Division during World War II. He married Eleanor Foulk on August 27, 1949. They shared many loving years together until she preceded him in death on August 3, 1990. Emil and Eleanor were members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and Trinity Episcopal Church in Flushing for many years. In Mr. Salay’s later years he attended First Presbyterian Church. Mr. Salay’s career was with the Flint Sausage Works, Salay’s Incorporated. He retired as President and CEO of the company in 2000. During his final years, Emil was lovingly cared for by his grand nephew and best friend, Bill Pirret, who shares his May 8th birthday. Surviving are: nephew, Paul Salay; nieces, Betty Lou Neely, Mary Nye, Rosemary Overstreet, Brenda Robinson, and Sally Stevens; and grand nieces and grand nephews.
