MCLAVY, Walter M. - Of Mt. Morris, age 83, died Friday, August 21, 2020 at his residence.
Funeral service will be held 11am Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at Faith Missionary Church, 1327 North Elms Road, Flint,
Pastor James Keller and Pastor Brent Kriesch officiating.
Burial in Flint Memorial Park.
Those desiring may make contributions to Faith Missionary Church or Brown City Missionary Camp.
Visitation 1-8pm Tuesday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint. Visitation 10am Wednesday at church until the time of the service.
Walter was born in Standish, Michigan on July 17, 1937, the son of Russell and Margaret (Clark) McLavy, and was a resident of the Flint area most of his life. He married Phyllis Chapman on October 18, 1958 and she preceded him in death on May 11, 2018. He served in the U.S. Army on the Presidential Honor Guard under President Eisenhower. He was a member of Faith Missionary Church for many years, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent for 27 years and on the church and deacon boards. Walt served on the Michigan District Missionary Church Executive Board and was Chairman of the Michigan District Building Board and Brown City Camp Board. He was also a member of the Lions Club, where he served as District Governor for District 11D1 in 1985-86 and in many other positions on the state and district level. Walt was employed by General Motors at Chevrolet V-8 Engine Plant for 32 years, retiring in 1991. After his retirement, he served as Maintenance Coordinator at Bethany Christian Mission School in Bethany, Kentucky, as well as on its Board of Directors.
Surviving are his children, Mark and wife Janet of Flint, Rebecca and husband Warren Schmidt of Thief River Falls, Minnesota;
5 granddaughters, Kirsten (Josh) Hartwig, Kristina Dik, Grace McLavy; Olivia Schmidt and Audrey Schmidt;
brother, Robert and wife Carol of Lapeer;
several nieces and nephews; and special friend Bea Cinke.
He was preceded in death by his father, Russell and mother, Margaret and sister, Maxine Greenman.
