MAHONEY, John Joseph - Of Burton, age 66, died Sunday, January 27, 2013 at McLaren-Flint.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 31, 2013 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 404 North Dayton Street, Davison, Father Carl A. Simon officiating.

Burial will take place at a later date in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Traverse City.

Visitation 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road. A Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Mahoney will be at the church from 10 a.m. Thursday until the time of the Mass.

John was born in Flint, Michigan on October 11, 1946, the son of Gerald and Annabelle (Derouin) Mahoney. He was a graduate of St. Paul’s Catholic High School and Western Michigan University. He also spent 4 years in the US Army as a drill sergeant. On August 18, 1967, he married Margaret Hughes.

John was a Human Resources Executive for General Motors for 38 years. He spent 8 years working at Acument Global Technologies, and most recently, enjoyed his time as a business consultant for ARaymond, Inc.

John was a devoted member of his community, volunteering with several organizations. Notably, he was a past member of the Luke M. Powers Catholic High School Board of Education, and a Past President of the Industrial Mutual Association of Flint. In 2000, he was elected into the Powers Catholic Hall of Fame, as the “Voice of the Chargers”, in recognition of his now 29 years as the athletics announcer. He also enjoyed coaching youth sports at local grade schools and in Flint city leagues.

John enjoyed spending his time with friends and family both at home and in Traverse City, Michigan. He was also a lifelong fan of the University of Notre Dame, and was so proud to be a part of the 2012 Undefeated Football season- traveling from Ireland to Miami, and everywhere in between, to watch this past fall.

John Mahoney was a loving and dedicated son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and coach.
Surviving are his wife of 45, Margaret;

four children, Brian (Marian), Erin (Jesse) Bryant, Megan, Casey (John) Tokarz;

five grandchildren, J.T. and Riley Bryant, Brenda and Brigit Mahoney and Thomas Tokarz;

mother, Annabelle Mahoney;

sisters, Nancy (Les) Shamel and Judy (Larry) Rowe;

brother, Michael David;

four nephews and many beloved friends. His kind and generous spirit will be missed.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Mahoney.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Father Fred Foundation or Luke M. Powers Catholic High School.
