Ira was born on January 1, 1952, to the late William James Sanborn and Shirley Ann Sanborn; he was the oldest of 9 children.
Ira graduated from Holy Rosary Catholic School in Flint in 1970; at age 14, along with 3 other students from Holy Rosary entered Seminary School, after a year the boys were sent home. Shortly after graduation Ira enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam Conflict, where he earned the Rifle Marksman Medal and the National Defense Ribbon.
Ira worked for General Motors Engine Plant in Flint until he retired, later he moved to his forever home in East Tawas where he created memories for both family and friends.
Ira enjoyed traveling and inciting trouble with “Billy and his Six Pack,” his dad and five brothers. In more recent years he enjoyed fishing with his brothers.
Ira was in constant contact with his family and made it his priority to keep us all connected. He had a colorful and generous personality to his parents, brothers and sisters, to the extended family of his former wife Debbie Berry, his grandchildren; his God son Mark Eric DeVoss, his God daughter Stephanie Shaw and her sister Marguerite Masar, to his countless nieces and nephews, cousins and the many lifetime friends and other people that could have passed through his life.
Ira was a great friend to those who knew him well, especially Ron Chamberlin, for which we are grateful for, Larry Freeman, Paula Mangett Christner, Mark Histed and Debbie Adams.
Through good times and bad, Ira, the ‘Big I’ was one of a kind. He was thrilled to be the oldest of his family and judging by all the pictures he kept of his nieces and nephews he was one proud Uncle.
Ira is survived by his mother, Shirley Ann Sanborn, his grandchildren, Josie Layne, Julia Stimson, and Gabby Ross, his daughter Sarah Layne; siblings, Mark (Yvonne), Sharon (Michael) Gillies, Alan, Lisa (Jody) Hood, Emily (Ray) Linton, William (Diane), Brian, many nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, William James Sanborn, and his brother Steven Roy Sanborn.
In memory of Ira, Keep Your Faith, Love Your Family, Share Your Blessing, and Go Fishing.
