Our loving Mother, Shirley Loretta Birchmeier of Maple Grove, age 92 passed away at Union Court Assisted Living in Chesaning on Feb 12, 2025.
Shirley was born Feb 24, 1932 to Frank and Margaret (Hafner) Bitterman. She married Alvin Birchmeier on Nov 8, 1952 and enjoyed 49 years together before he passed away in 2001. They had 5 sons and 2 daughters and raised them on their family farm in Maple Grove Twp. She was a homemaker and worked very hard on the family farm while raising their 7 children. She also worked at the New Lothrop High School Cafeteria as an assistant cook several years after the kids were older. She was a lifelong member of St. Michael’s Church of Maple Grove. She enjoyed her many flower gardens, shopping with her sisters, playing cards with family and friends. Her and Alvin loved polkas and country music and played her accordion with Alvin on his guitar Sunday’s after church entertaining the kids. They loved their country music whether entertaining others or singing and dancing with family and friends. This family tradition is still carried on today with many family members at reunions and parties. Shirley and Alvin bought a home at Houghton Lake after Alvin retired and enjoyed having the kids and grandkids visit them, taking them fishing and making chicken on the grill. They loved traveling to their Florida home every winter and occasionally the family, their kids or grandkids would visit. They made many new friends in Florida as well, along with a lot of music, singing and dancing. She especially loved spending time with her kids, grandkids, great grandkids, always waiting to see the next baby born. As Shirley’s health declined, she made her new home at Union Court Assisted Living where she lived over 6-1/2 yrs. and made many more friends. She enjoyed all the visits from her sister-in laws, nieces, nephews and other friends. Anyone who knew her, knew she loved her candy and sweets so anyone who visited made sure she was fully stocked, and those little great-grandkids sure loved visiting when she passed out candy! She had an act for teasing and making up songs with the grandkids and they loved every minute of it no matter how silly she was!
Shirley is survived by her 7 Children- Duane(Judy), Fred(Lisa), Brenda(Mark), Ron(Mona), Cheryl(Barry), Randy(Lois), Stan(Joy); 17 Grandchildren- Steve, Marty(Renee), Eric(Heather), Kelly(Todd), Brandon(Kellie), Courtenay(Stephen), Jason(Bailey), Aaron(Allison), Ryon(April), Rodney(Emily), Rick(Lilia), Terra(Cory), Jenna(Shane), Crystal, Nick(Robin), Sarah(Wes), Tracie(Darren); 33 Great-Grands- Gage, Kora, Ella, Cole, Noah, Aria, Logan(Ava), Landen, Rowan, Raiden, Hannah, Brianna, Ethan, Remy and Ivy Santini, Brodie, Collin, Myla, Violet and Reed Massini, Ben, Jessa, Andrew, Max, Jacob, Mason, Jayden & Stella Martin, Elizabeth Homan, Kenton, Paisley Livingston & Dawson & Brinnley Clark ;1 Great-Great Grand Layla Rose Birchmeier with another baby boy Birchmeier on the way plus several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren who she loved as her own.
