Margaret was born on November 29, 1924 the daughter of Albert and Bertha (DeCurry) Gauthier. She graduated from Flint Technical High School in February of 1943. In 1945, Margaret enlisted in the U.S. Army Medical Corps serving as a Medical Technician at Percy Jones Army Hospital and Fort Custer Annex Hospital in Battle Creek, Michigan. On September 29, 1945, Margaret married SSgt Ralph E. Land of Martinsville, Indiana in the U.S. Army Chapel at Fort Custer, MI. Ralph was a patient at Percy Jones Hospital recuperating from wounds received on Luzon in the Philippines. They were married by Father Albert J. Hoffman, a Captain in the Army Medical Corps, also a wounded Veteran. Ralph and Margaret remained friends with Fr. Hoffman after their discharges and always sent him a box of homemade cookies at Christmas. After their discharges, Ralph and Margaret made their home on Bristol Rd. in Flint from 1947 to 1951. In 1951, they moved to the farm in Thetford Township so Ralph could continue his love of farming. From 1958 to 1960, Margaret was employed as secretary at LaCure Elementary School in Thetford Twp. From 1960 to 1970, she worked for Jerry Davidson Buick as a bookkeeper. When the business closed, she was a bookkeeper for Blain Buick. In 1972, Margaret was elected Treasurer in Thetford Township, serving 16 years in that position and 4 years as a Trustee on the township board, retiring in 1992. While a member of the board, she served 16 years as Township Representative to the Clio Area Fire Authority Board, 8 years as Township Representative to the Genesee County Road and Bridges Advisory Committee, and worked closely with Supervisor Harold Brady in starting the Thetford Senior Citizens Center. She highly valued her years on the Fire Authority board, especially the friendships made with the Fire Dept. personnel and representatives from Vienna Twp. and the City of Clio. Margaret and Ralph loved to travel in their motor home and visited many states- their favorite camping spots being those in the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains. In 1984, as a retirement gift for her husband, they took a 13 day tour to Hawaii. Both being veterans, the highlight of their trip was a visit to Pearl Harbor.
She is survived by: daughters, Cheryl Allen of Mt. Morris, Karen (Ron) Pickett of Davison, Margaret Ann (Peggy) and husband Scott Castle of Clio; 9 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 1 great great granddaughter; brother, Joseph L Gauthier of Clio; brother in law, Donald of Indiana; several nieces and nephews; friends of 75 years, Dorothy McClanahan, Mary and Harvey Worle, Betty Carriveau, Brittie Yaw and Helen Thompson.
