Charles “Chuck” Hoffman, 95, formerly of Flushing, Michigan, passed away peacefully, December 22, 2017, at the Toni & Trish House in Auburn. He was born October 23, 1922, in Astoria, New York, to the late Charles Francis and Cora (Powell) Hoffman.
On October 7, 1950, he married Jaclyn M. Kieley in Montclair, New Jersey. Their deep, enduring love resulted in a marriage lasting 67 years. Chuck spent his first 18 years on Long Island, graduating from Manhasset High School in 1941. After completing his freshman year at Alfred University, a small liberal arts college in upstate New York, he enlisted in the Army Ski Troops in the fall of 1942. Chuck trained with the 10th Mountain Division’s 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment at Camp Hale in Colorado. In July of 1943 he sailed with the regiment and landed on Alaska’s Aleutian Islands in connection with the Japanese having landed forces there. Upon his return to the States, Chuck was selected for Officers Candidate School. Discharged from active duty in early 1946, he continued to serve as a Reserve Commissioned Officer until 1954.
Chuck returned to Alfred University in 1946 and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts in 1949. He spent his career in the automobile industry, working during the summers in his father’s Packard dealership in Newark, New Jersey, until it was sold in 1953. After a brief stint as a Ford salesman at a New Jersey dealership, an opportunity arose to work for Buick Motor Division. After various positions in the New York City and Newark zone offices, he was transferred to Flint, Michigan, in 1961. He became Budget Manager in 1964 and retired from Buick in 1982.
While at Alfred University in 1948, he met the love of his life, Jaclyn “Jackie” Kieley. They graduated together in 1949 and married on October 7, 1950. While living in Boonton, New Jersey, they started their family. Chuck embraced life to its fullest and encouraged his three young children to do the same. Although he was able to pursue his outdoor interests of hunting, fishing, and gardening in Boonton, it was his career move to Flint that really opened the doors of opportunity for his avocational pursuits. The family settled on a 62-acre farm in Flushing Township where he truly became a “gentleman farmer”. Now there was plenty of space for kennels and a large-scale vegetable garden, as well as for his daughters’ horses and chickens and a large workshop for his son’s mechanical endeavors. He and Jackie loved the farm and lived there independently until May 2017.
Chuck is survived by his daughter Gail L. Hoffman (Thomas H. Lane); son Charles (Chip) P. Hoffman Jr. (Marcia L. Reed); daughter Lisa J. Hoffman; grandson Christopher R. Johnson; grandson Adam P. Johnson; granddaughter Alexandra L. (Nick) Gamber; nephew John J. Kieley III; nieces Lynn L. Kimmel and Nan E. Desrosiers; sister-in-law Lieselotte Hoffman; and nieces Janeal (Fred) Scott and Arlene (Adam) Wayte. Chuck was predeceased by his wife Jackie and brother Donald E. Hoffman.
The family would like to thank the staff at Independence Village, Laurus Home Care, Mid-Michigan Hospice, and the Toni & Trish House for their professionalism; expertise; and, above all, compassion. Ware-Smith-Woolever is handling final arrangements; cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be conducted at a later time. |
