Gary L. Phillips, age 68, died peacefully on Thursday, November 10, 2016 after a year long battle with lung cancer. He was born on September 1, 1948 in Flint, Michigan; the son of William and Rosetta Phillips.
When Gary was just 16 years old, he left home in Mount Morris to become a truck driver. He saw the United States as a cross country truck driver for several freight companies. Recently, he was a full time chauffeur for his grandchildren.
Gary is described as an upbeat person with a positive attitude. His caring and friendly spirit created many friendships. He was a street-smart and was knowledgeable about a wide variety of subjects. He could fix most anything and his family kept him busy with repairs.
Besides loving his family, Gary enjoyed CB radio, auto racing, building vintage model cars, bald eagles, Up North (particularly Harbor Springs and Mackinac Island) and was a Detroit Tigers fan. He liked to cook and was a foodie.
Gary is survived by his wife of 14 years, Sara; his children: Tracy Mansfield (Mark), Kyle Phillips, Virginia Conger (Scooter), Jeffrey Phillips, Shane Phillips, Traci Wilson (Chris), Jennifer Reizen (Scott) and Bob Tiderington (Michelle); his grandchildren: Ryan, Tyler, Brantley, Pamela, Christopher, Adilynn, Cassie, Alex, Frank, Lucas, Jake, Gwyneth, Charles, Meredith and Henry; his siblings: Diane Laurin, Thomas and Richard Phillips and Ramona Leach; and his mother-in-law, Jean Elliott. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Rosetta.
A funeral will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road in Grosse Pointe Woods. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 2:00 to 8:00 pm and again on Sunday prior to the funeral.
