HOHOLIK, James A. of Durand died Monday, May 7, 2012 at his home. He was 80. James was born Sept. 13, 1931 in Detroit and was the son of John and Mary Hoholik. He was raised in Flint and graduated from St. Michael’s Catholic High School in Flint. He attended Flint Junior College, the University of Miami in Florida and the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. James served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. He married Patricia Snyder on May 26, 1962 at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Flint. James owned the Teddy Bear Bar in Bancroft and Jim’s Beer and Wine in Flint with his wife. He later worked in real estate. He was active in the Latin Tridentine Mass held weekly at All Saints Catholic Church in Flint. James spent many summers during his childhood in Manistique with his extended family. He fondly retold stories from those visits to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula throughout his life. He was very proud of his Hoholik name and his Slovakian heritage. In recent years, he enjoyed attending all school and sporting events of his grandsons, including their practices. James was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his brother, John and his sister, Barbara. He is survived by his children, Stephen (Elaine) of Owosso, Timothy (Pam) of Swartz Creek, Christine (Roger) McNeal of San Antonio, Texas, Suzanne of Columbus, Ohio, and Amy Hoholik-Bandy of Swartz Creek; his grandchildren, Lauren, Rachael and Sean McNeal, and Aaron and Tyler Bandy; his sister, Virginia Yankee of Durand; his brother, Thomas of Perry; his aunt, Mary Carlson of Manistique; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and his dog, Gypsy. A Mass celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 11, 2012 at St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Swartz Creek, Father Steven M. Mattson officiating. Burial in New Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Friends may visit family 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 W. Hill Road in Flint with a rosary prayed at 7 p.m. James will be at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday. Donations for Masses can be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
