David was born at St. Joseph Hospital in Flint, MI on January 24, 1942 to Eunice and Charles Wilson. David had 2 sisters and 2 brothers: Patricia, Arthur, Charlene, and Tommy. Eunice passed away when Tommy was born, leaving Charles to raise 5 children on his own during hard times without a job. Charles made a difficult decision and kept Patricia, allowing the other 4 children to be adopted by good families. David and Charlene were adopted by Harold and Edna Merritt. David and Charlene had a fun childhood and David always protected Charlene. David graduated from Mandeville High School in 1960 and begin working at Hazeltine & Perkins for a year. David was fortunate to get a job at General Motors working in production and supervision. David met Sharon Lee Fick while water skiing on Lake Fenton in 1960 and they were married June 29, 1963. David was drafted into the Army in 1965 for 2 years. During this time, David and Sharon were blessed with a daughter, Tammy and son, Scott. After the Army, David returned to General Motors, retiring after 34 years.
David had many interests: mowing lawns; fishing with his grandsons and friends; collecting antique fishing baits; working in the garage and rebuilding cars with Scott; going to swap meets to buy/sell car parts; remodeling homes with Tammy and Scott; photography (he was always the one taking pictures); going up north to their cabin at Canada Creek Ranch with family and friends where they enjoyed snowmobiling, cross country skiing, fishing, riding bikes with David and Derek; and helping take care of his mother-in-law, Margaret for 15 years (they became best buddies).
David and Sharon would have been married for 62 years in June. Family was always a priority to them and they are thankful to have many friends.
Surviving are: spouse, Sharon; daughter, Tammy (Greg); son, Scott (Susan); grandsons, David (Christina), Derek (Brittni), Greg Jr., Chris, David, and Daniel; and great-grandchildren, Braylynn, David James, Everly, Dominic, and Dawson.
David was preceded in death by his natural and adopted parents; brothers, Arthur and Tommy; and faithful fishing buddy, Bill Schumacher.
The family wishes to THANK their family and friends for their love and kind words and the hospice team at McLaren Hospice for their care and support during the last few days of David’s life. |
