Charles Kelly Safley was born on February 20, 1945 in Indianola, Mississippi to Dr. Thomas J. and Louise Safley (nee Mitchim). Charles grew up in Jackson, MS and, although he came to love his adopted home town of Flint, his soul remained in the Mississippi Delta. Charlie loved music and had a wide and varied taste in musical genres; he loved Bluegrass, Blues, James Brown, as well as Classical and Symphonies. Upon graduation from Murrah High School, Charles obtained a B.S. from Vanderbilt University and a M.D. from the University of Mississippi Medical School. Following his Orthopedic residency at the Medical College of Virginia, Charlie came to Flint to begin his Orthopedic practice. In 1995, he joined Family Orthopedic Associates and spent a total of 38 productive years caring for patients, training Resident Orthopedic Surgeons and developing close personal friendships with his partners and colleagues, especially Dr. Sidney Martin and James Long. Ever the gentleman, his professional career was spent positively impacting the people of our area with his skill as a diagnostician and surgeon. Charlie was fortunate to share a great love with his wife and best friend, Ellen. Together they travelled extensively, New Orleans and Aruba being among their favorite places to visit. They shared many special trips with their beloved daughter, Amy and treasured granddaughters, Ava and Victoria. Love of cruising encouraged them to become avid boaters, spending many weekends on their boat,” Knot on Call”, finding a second home and family at the Saginaw Bay Yacht Club. Racing was another of Charlie’s great passions. From Rally Racing at events such as Press on Regardless, to track days at Waterford Hills, to Sprint Car Racing, to Vintage Racing at Watkins Glen, if it had horsepower, Charlie wanted to drive it. Trips to the Goodwood Historic Races in Chichester, England became a semi-annual “pint-athon” for Charlie and friends. Charles was a devoted member of St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Grand Blanc where he was a choir member and served on the church Vestry currently as Junior Warden. Although his much-deserved time in retirement was far too short, Charlie, his wife and family were blessed to have had so many wonderful shared experiences and made many dear memories.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents and his father-in-law, Robert L. Weycker. He is survived by his wife, Ellen, daughter, Amy and son-in-law, Troy Monroe, granddaughters, Ava and Victoria, mother-in-law, Lucille Weycker, brothers, Dr. Thomas Safley (Sharon) of Independence, Missouri and Dr. William Safley (Dr. Brenda) of Gulfport, Mississippi. Also surviving are brothers and sisters-in-law, James Weycker, Joseph Weycker, Margaret Merrell, Robert Weycker, Patricia Butters, Theresa Hayes, their spouses, many nieces and nephews. Our profound thanks to the caring and compassionate staff of McLaren-Flint. From housekeepers to nursing staff too numerous to name, we will always remember your loving support.
