Age: 92
Community: Grand Blanc, MI

Dora M. Black Mayo Ashley - Age 92, of Midland, returned to her heavenly home on April 29, 2024, at home with family by her side.

Dora was born on September 14, 1931, in Spratt, Michigan, the daughter of Russell and Georgiana (Desermeau) Black. Dora Black and Robert "Bob" Mayo met when both were standing in the wedding of Dora's brother Arnold who was marrying Bob's sister Lorraine. Fate had its hand in that meeting, as Dora was a last-minute replacement for a bridesmaid who was ill. Dora and Bob were united in marriage on April 23, 1949. They moved to the Holly, MI area and were married for 57 years until his passing in 2006 and had five children together. In 2008, Dora moved to Abbey Park Independent Senior Living Community In Grand Blanc. It was here that she met and married Joseph Ashley in 2009. It was an occasion that made the local news that included 84-year-old Joe's electric wheelchair with cans tied to the back and pulled behind it. They were married for 6 years until his passing in 2015.

Dora was a devoted member of the Great Lakes Baptist Temple in Flint for 55 years until it closed, and she also volunteered in the Sunday school nursery. She gives credit to her longevity to her strong faith in God.

In addition to raising five children, she also cleaned house for 18 years for a single mother in the area. Dora and Bob traveled to every state in the U.S. as well as many trips abroad including Israel, Egypt, and Greece, among others. Her smile was infectious and she had a witty sense of humor in which unexpected zingers came out of nowhere. She lived independently until the final months of her life, when she moved to Midland to live with her great-niece Natalee (Scott) Cergnul while on hospice care.

Dora is survived by her brothers Arlington (Faithy Black and Harvey Black, and sister Florence (George) Moutsatson. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Shannon (Tim) Wade, Robert (Katherine) Church, James Church, Cory Tyson, Emily Mayo, Kevin Mayo, Bianca (Christopher) Farkas, and George (Aryn) Mayo, as well as 10 great-grandchildren: Nicole Wade, Timothy Wade, Isabella Church, Elliana Church, Alex Church, Caitlyn Tyson, Bodeyn Little, Dyson Mayo, Barrett Mayo, Adler Mayo, and a slew of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and two spouses, Dora is preceded in death by nine siblings: Maryon, Francis, Lloyd, Helen (Black) Clark, Albert "Roy", Arnold, Ralph, "baby boy", Donna (Black) Smith; her five children: Marilyn, David, Sandra (Mayo)Tyson, Donald, and Dennis; one great-grandchild; Maria Wade. It is inconceivable the amount of loss she endured in her 92 years, but her family legacy will live on. She will be dearly missed by her loved ones, who celebrate as she is reunited with her creator
