HORRIGAN, Albert P. “Pat” – An original Judge of the City of Flint’s 68th District Court, died Wednesday March 14 surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was 74 years old. The celebration of his life will be held at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2012, Fr. Paul Tarabay Celebrant. Cremation will take place and internment will follow at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held 12-8 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Catholic Charities of Genesee and Shiawassee Counties directed to the North End Soup Kitchen of Flint, Michigan. Albert was born April 6th 1937 to Albert and Bernice (Littlejohns) Horrigan and raised in Flint. He graduated from St. Michael’s Catholic High School in 1955. He attended Sacred Heart Seminary and earned degrees in both theology and philosophy in 1959. He then graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1962. Albert was a lifelong student, earning his Masters Degree in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University, and continuing his studies at Rutgers University, Boston college, and the University of Utah. In 1968 Albert left private practice and was elected Judge at the age of the 31 when the state district court system was first created. He served 24 years, retiring in 1992. His tenure included terms as Chief Judge of the Court, as well as President of the State District Court Judge’s Association. He was a member of the Michigan State Bar Association for more than 50 years. While serving as Judge, Albert required that everyone present in the courtroom respect and adhere to the rules and procedures. Every day he strived to objectively evaluate the facts of each case, properly apply the laws of the State of Michigan, and then, if necessary, dispense an appropriate sanction. Some liked his style… some did not, but most who left his courtroom left having learned something positive. As an advocate of community service and social justice, his activities were numerous. Al had a special affection for Catholic charities, especially the North End Soup Kitchen. After leaving the bench Albert was appointed Chief In-house council for Mott Community College where every day on his way to work he was proud to drive on the road named after his father, Albert R. Horrigan, former Speaker Pro-Tem of the Michigan State House of Representatives. Off the bench and out of the court room, those who knew Al knew he loved to have fun and be the life of the party. An enthusiast of Flint history, Al always had a story about “the good ol’ days” and loved to share them with all. Often he could be found at the Farmer’s Market sharing these stories. For over 30 years Al enjoyed his passion for sailing the Great Lakes on his two ships, da Bench, and da Bench II. After retiring from sailing, Al left the Great Lakes and cruised the seas and saw the world. While not cruising, another of Al’s passions was thoroughbred horses. He joined Keenland Racetrack in Lexington, Kentucky as a Guest Services Associate where he served until his passing. Al loved his family and community deeply. He had a generous spirit and a friendly word to all those who knew him. Al is survived by: sisters, Alice, and Margaret (Dick); sons, Pat (Karin), Mike (Asuka), and Mark (Teresa); Three grandchildren, Jack, Mary, and Allan. Special friend, Phyllis; many nieces, nephews, and friends. Al was preceded in death by his son John, wife Mary, and parents, Albert and Bernice Horrigan. The Horrigan family is thankful and grateful for all the love, support and prayers of Al’s caregivers, family and friends - especially in the last weeks of his life.
