Janice J. Hoshal, age 89, passed away on Friday, October 25, 2024 at Vibrant Living in Durand. Janice was born in Durand on June 8, 1935, the daughter of John and Lula (Onyon) Dowell. She was a Railroader to the core. Her father, John worked at the Roundhouse as a ‘hosler’. As a child, Janice would bring him lunch, calling her dad with her famous ‘whistle’. In school, she exceled in music, sports, and socializing and was part of ‘Southside’s Beta Kabal 8’ (gang of girls), graduating from Durand High School in 1953.
Janice was a dedicated and proud community member, notably through her work at her husband's medical practice from her high school years through 1981. She married Verne L. Hoshal, MD on June 18, 1958. Her career as a medical assistant and her personal life was marked by a deep compassion and a profound commitment to the care of others, with friends and family as her heart and soul. She was a lifetime blood donor for the American Red Cross and a supporter of the Durand-Vernon Ambulance, Depot, Schools, VFW, and Scouts.
Janice was fearless, independent, hard-working, and a jack-of-all-trades. She even mowed her own lawn into 2021! Janice could also have fun like no other and loved a good laugh and an occasional casino visit. She enjoyed many other activities as well: boating, fishing, gardening, painting, cooking (especially frying fish), sports, dancing, and drinking her signature Manhattan cocktail. She appreciated the arts and was musically inclined, playing the piano, ukulele, harmonica, or passing the time just singing a song. Janice was a member of the First Congregational Church of Bancroft, its women’s fellowship and a founding member of their food pantry.
In addition to her parents and husband, Janice was preceded in death by her son, Scott; step-son, Ronald; grandson, Jeffrey; siblings: Wayne (Jo & Joann) Dowell, Marjorie (Bob) Middleton, Fredrick (Marge) Dowell, and Shirley (Richard) Kennedy; nephew Timothy, several cousins, in-laws, many friends, and her cherished animal companions.
Janice is survived by her sons: Gregory and Keith (Hector); stepsons: Verne, Jr. (Agnes) and Stephen; grandsons: Steven (Gillian) and Brendan (Danielle); step grandchildren; great-grandchildren, Malakai and Ellie (posthumously); step great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, a few cousins, and friends who will miss her dearly.
