Sarah Jane Nelson, of Davison, died Thursday August 30, 2012, age 80. Sarah Jane was born February 27, 1932 to Mary and Thomas Gwyn, in Flint, Michigan. Known to her friends and family as Jane or Janey, she and her sisters, Barbie and Martha were devoted members of the Red Cross while growing up, and they put on numerous plays to raise funds for the organization. She attended Flint Central High School, where she was active on the Bowling Team, several girl’s sport clubs and the Belle Masque Acting Troupe. She graduated High School in 1950, and earned her BFA from Ohio State University in 1954, where she studied art and interior design, and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.
Sarah Jane married Irving T. Nelson on June 28, 1958, who preceded her in death in 2010. Sarah Jane and Irving had four children: Margaret, Jane, Thomas and Patrick. She was an avid gardener and loved the wildflowers, animals and birds that surrounded their family home.
She taught art for several years in the Flint public and Catholic schools as well as the Valley School. A wonderful sculptor of clay, Sarah Jane enjoyed creating wildlife sculptures, especially river otters, bears and hedgehogs. She was a long-time member of the Left Bank Gallery, serving on the board of directors, and a member of the Flint Artists Guild.
She is survived by her four children Margaret L. Nelson, Jane M. Nelson, Thomas E. Nelson and wife Michele Acker and their two children Avery and Oliver, and Patrick A. Nelson and wife Mellissa Hasler-Nelson. She is also survived by her sister Martha Boss and her husband, Robert Boss. Her sister, Barbara Crow, died in 2000.
