HARDENBURG, Mary Louise (Mary Lou) - age 78, on August 5, 2017 went to be with her Lord. She passed peacefully at home. Mary Lou, born in Jackson, Michigan on June 29, 1939, was the third of five children to Betty (Turner) and Allen McArthur. She graduated from Jackson High School, and attended Jackson Community College for two years to study music education, later transferring to Michigan State University on a national defense scholarship to continue her music education. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education in 1961. She moved to Genesee County and met her future husband, Eldon, at a Mott Adult Education dance class, and married him on June 19th, 1965 at Bethel Baptist Church in Jackson, Michigan. They raised their three children in Grand Blanc, MI. Eldon and Mary Lou celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary this year! Mary Lou began her teaching career at Flint Hamady High School where she wrote the school’s alma mater and fight song, which they still use today. In addition, she taught in Eaton Rapids, Grand Blanc, and Goodrich, MI. After retiring from Goodrich Middle School in 1996, where she also taught geography and English, Eldon and Mary Lou spent their winters in Dunedin, FL. As a devout Christian, she was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Grand Blanc, MI and an associate member of Faith Lutheran Church in Dunedin, FL. In addition to serving her churches in many ways, she enjoyed teaching, reading, music, sewing, knitting, crocheting, quilting, scrapbooking, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Eldon; daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Amy and Zoltan Nagy, Foothill Ranch, CA; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Jeffrey and Trisha Hardenburg, Grand Blanc, MI; and son, Stephen Hardenburg, Providence, RI. She is also survived by four grandchildren; Michael and Nicholas Nagy, Sarah and Mary Hardenburg, as well as her brother and sister-in-law, Warren and Judy McArthur, Chelsea, MI; brother-in-law, James Kokas, Riverside, CA; brother-in-law, Marvin Hardenburg, Grand Blanc, MI; and sister-in-law, Barbara Hardenburg, Flint, MI; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Barry and Terry McArthur, and sister, Bonnie Kokas. The family would like to give special thanks to the wonderful staff at Great Lakes Caring Hospice, especially nurse Marty Valentine, for the excellent care they provided Mary Lou over the past two years. They would also like to thank Linda Mooney for her Christian companionship and tender-loving care. Visitation will be at Hill Funeral Home - 11723 S. Saginaw St, Grand Blanc, MI on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 from 11AM-3PM and 6PM-9PM. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at 11AM at Faith Lutheran Church - 12534 Holly Rd, Grand Blanc, MI with one hour of visitation prior to the service at the church. Pastor Joe Cottam officiating. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Grand Blanc. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Faith Lutheran Church in Grand Blanc, Faith Lutheran Church, 1620 Pinehurst Road, Dunedin, FL 34698, Carriage Town Ministries in Flint, MI, or a charity of your choice.
