Of West Branch, age 85, died Sunday, January 13, 2013. The funeral service will take place 12:00 pm, Friday, January 18, 2013, at the Martin Funeral, Cremation & Tribute Services in Mt. Morris. Pastor David Burkett will officiate with burial to follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. Bob’s family will be present at the funeral home to receive friends on Thursday from 11:00am to 1:00pm then 3:00pm to 8:00pm. Those desiring may consider memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
Robert “Bob” was born January 23, 1927, in Paragould, Arkansas, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Riley and Arvie (Row) Smith. He and Doris were united in marriage February 21, 1953, in Mt. Morris. Bob worked for Chevy-in-the-hole for 33 years before retiring in 1980 and was a member of UAW Local #659. He proudly served in the United States Navy during WWII before receiving his honorable discharge. Bob enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, hunting, fishing, bowling, snowmobiling, listening to the Detroit Tigers on the radio and traveling to Florida for the winter.
Left to cherish his memory, wife of 59 years Doris; two children, Robert E.Smith, Sherry McNally and Jim Haviland; three grandchildren, Tom (Lisa) Crawford, Kristen Smith and Jordyn Smith and great-granddaughter, Alexis Crawford; two sisters, Sarah (Dick) Samuelson, Sandy Ayris and Patrick; and many other family members and friends.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Morris, Jim, Charles, Leslie, Francis, George; sisters, Mary, Lillian, Alice, Marie, MaryEllen, Beverly; and son-in-law, Tim McNally.
Roberts’ family would like to extend a special thank you to the entire staff at Bortz Health Care in Rose City and Heartland Hospice for the wonderful care they gave Robert and for being there for Doris. Their hospitality will never be forgotten.
