BARTKIW, Maria - Of Flint, age 96, passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at her residence.
Visitation 5-8pm Friday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint. A Panahyda Service will be held 7pm Friday evening at the funeral home. Visitation 9:30am Saturday at church until the time of the Divine Liturgy.
Funeral Divine Liturgy/Office of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10am Saturday, April 16, 2016, at St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church, 2333 North Elms Road, Flushing,

Burial in Evergreen Cemetery.

Maria was born in Sanok, Ukraine on March 3, 1920 and was a resident of the Flint area since 1954. During World War II she was interned at forced labor in Germany after having survived the Ukrainian famine (Holodomor) as a child in the 1930’s. While in Germany, she met and married the love of her life, John Bartkiw on November 22, 1944 and he preceded her in death on December 28, 2015 after 71 years of marriage. Maria and John lived several years in Belgium before they immigrated with their two children to the United States. Mrs. Bartkiw was employed by McLaren Regional Medical Center, Radiology Department, retiring on April 27, 1984. She very much loved her children and grandchildren, delighting in the title of Baba (Ukrainian for grandmother). She was a longstanding member of St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church.
Surviving are children, Dr. Nykola (Pearl) Bartkiw and Ms. Marie Miller;
5 grandchildren; Olena (Dan) Mandeville, Dr. Mykola Bartkiw, Lesia (Chris) Campbell, Lara (Larry) Weatherford and Tamara Kochie;
6 great-grandchildren; Natasha and Tyler Oliver, Anna Miller, Hunter Brock, Gabriel and Natalia Hay;
1 great-great-grandson, Vincent Craddock.
