POPOFF, Anastasios (Alex) - of Davison, age 80, walked into the warm sunshine of eternity on Sunday April 12, 2020. A private burial has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held at a later date. “Not all heroes wear capes” may sound like a cliché statement until you have lived in the presence of such an individual. Alex was born in Bouf, Macedonia on November 5th, 1939, to the late Petre and Alvona Popoff. When he was just 8 years old, he and his mother embarked on a 1,500-mile journey for their lives as refugees amidst a domestic war. After 8 years in hiding they were finally reunited with their family in Bouf. It was there, On November 9, 1964, he married the love of his life, Magda Soumbas. With next to nothing in their pockets, he left a land he called home to give his family, and generations after, a chance at a better life. In 1968, with a few partners, he took over Starlite Coney Island and left a legacy that still breathes life into the community. To all who knew him, Alex was: a peacemaker, a pillar of strength, a protector of many, a selfless soul, a generous hand, a joyful smile, Love personified. To his family, he truly was a hero.
Surviving is his wife, Magda Popoff. Children, Kosta (Sue) Popoff and Helen Naum. Grandchildren, Kirsten (Kurt Hoffman), Jesse Popoff, Holly (Ryan) Adams, Alexander (Erin) Naum, Christian (Selena) Naum, Maggie Naum, Halli and Michael Popoff. Great grandchild, Gabriel Naum. Brothers, John (Fanny) Popoff and Angelo (Helen) Popoff. Several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceded in death by his son, Peter Popoff; Parents, Petre and Alvona Popoff; Brother, Sime (Anastasia) Popoff; Sister, Kata (Risto) Antoniadis; Nephew, George Antoniadis; and Son in law, John Naum.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, where Alex was a faithful member.
