SPAID, Darrell Lee "Sam" - Of Grand Blanc, age 93, died Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at Abbey Park.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
Darrell was born March 5, 1921 to Claude and Zena Spaid in New Carlisle, In and later moved to LaPorte, IN. After graduation from LaPorte High School in 1939, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1940. A World War II veteran, Sam attained the rank of Master Sergeant and served with the 404th Bomb Squad at Adak in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska.
After the military he attended Cal-Aero Technical School and received his aircraft and engine licenses, leading to his first career as a chief mechanic at Indiana Air Service, South Bend, IN. Sam’s second career was in automobile sales for 17 years, also in the South Bend area. Buying into a Burger Chef franchise, Sam moved to Owosso, MI and was in the restaurant business for over 20 years, selling his Hardee’s store in Owosso in 1989.
He enjoyed many years of retirement at his lake home in St. Helen, MI and later resided on Potter Road in Flushing, MI and most recently lived at Abbey Park in Grand Blanc, MI.
Sam loved everything aviation and was an avid reader. He enjoyed traveling and made numerous cross-country and “snowbird” trips in his RV. An engraving business, ship modeling, workshop tinkering, playing cards, fishing, playing pool and walking the dog all kept Sam busy and happy during his retirement years.
Sam is survived by his wife of 69 years, Betty Kasbaum Spaid;
three children, Doug (Cindy) Spaid of Havelock, NC,
Norma Tomasoski of Flushing, MI and
Peggy (Keith) Brock of Indio, CA;
brother, Harold (Gail) Spaid of Huntington Beach, CA;
two nieces, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; nephew, Mike Spaid and son-in-law, Paul Tomasoski.
In accordance with Sam’s wishes, there will be no funeral service and cremains will be later interred at Great Lakes National Cemetery.
If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Medical Team Hospice of Flint, MI or charity of your choice.
