Evelyn Dykewicz, R.N., beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother died at the age of 94 on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2024, in St. Louis, Missouri, after a long illness. Evelyn was born in Detroit on November 29, 1929, to John and Susie Ingrodi (née Poprick). She was raised in Hamtramck, Michigan. After graduating from the High School of Commerce in Detroit, she worked in the office at Chrysler Corporation for three years. While at Chrysler, she began volunteering as a Red Cross aide at St. Francis Hospital in Detroit and became interested in nursing. She later stated that she “found tremendous satisfaction in helping and giving care to others.” She decided to enroll at Providence Hospital School of Nursing in Detroit and became a registered nurse (R.N.) in 1953.
During her senior year of nursing school, she went on a blind date with a young medical student from Wayne State University. They hit it off. In 1954, Evelyn married the newly graduated Richard A. Dykewicz, M.D. in Detroit. They moved to Flint, Michigan, where her husband served his medical internship at Hurley Hospital (now Hurley Medical Center). They settled in Flint. Her husband had a family practice office on Flushing Rd. until his death in 1999.
From 1954-1955, Evelyn worked as a private duty nurse at Hurley, McLaren and St. Joseph Hospitals in Flint, and worked as an industrial nurse at Chevrolet Division. Her nursing career was interrupted when her children arrived. Evelyn and her husband raised four children: Mark Dykewicz, M.D. (Lenora-Marya Anop) of St. Louis, MO, Clare A. Dykewicz, M.D. of Atlanta, GA, Philip Dykewicz (Iris Niemann) of Grosse Pointe Park, MI, and Paul Dykewicz of North Bethesda, MD. In late 2015, Evelyn moved to St. Louis, MO amid the Flint water crisis. She resided in St. Louis, MO until her death.
Evelyn was a loving and dedicated mother who was delighted to eventually welcome four grandsons: Stuart (Luisa Mies), of Hachenburg, Germany, Duncan, of Cologne, Germany, Matthew and William, of St. Louis, MO, and great-grandson Bruno of Hachenburg, Germany. She was predeceased by her husband Dr. Richard Dykewicz, brother John William Ingrody, sisters-in-law Jane Ingrody and Arlene Dykewicz, and cousin Barbara Kovall. She is survived by brother-in-law Norman Dykewicz, sister-in-law Dolores Kokx, nephews Alan Ingrody (Kathy), Ronald Ingrody (Pam), Kevin Ingrody (Carol), Michael Kokx, David Kokx (Cindy), Robert Kokx (Kris), niece Mary Frances Carpenter (Phil), cousins Judy Stuempfle, Arnie and Eric Kovall, Robina Campbell, Patricia Leonard, Stephanie Leonard Miklebost (Ron), Dan Leonard (Eddi Tolentino) and Joseph Leonard Jr. (Shirley), and many other dear cousins and friends.
Evelyn strongly believed in the power of education, the importance of community service, and in supporting public health and preventive health programs, particularly immunizations and health screening. For many years she was active in the Genesee County Medical Society Women’s Auxiliary (now Alliance) and served on several committees, and held the offices of secretary, vice president, and eventually president of the Auxiliary from 1971-1972. In the 1970s, she was also active in the social committee of the Flint Swim and Racket Club. She was an active member of the Parent Teacher’s Association (PTA) and served on a Citizen’s Advisory Committee for Academically Talented Students for the Flint Public School System in the late 1960s-early 1970s. She was on the Board of Directors for the Visiting Nurses Association and served as health chairman at Anderson Elementary School in Flint. She worked on health programs at Longfellow Jr. High School and Powers Catholic High School in Flint. She was an enthusiastic supporter of the St John Vianney School and Powers Catholic High School. She and her late husband were parishioners at St. John Vianney Catholic Church for many years. She enjoyed singing and playing the piano, concerts, musical theater, travel and Caribbean cruises, steel drum music, ice skating, bowling, drinking tall glasses of ice water and eating chocolate. She was a patron of the arts.
