Born: 7/6/1930
Died: 11/20/2024
Age: 94
Community: Flint Twp, MI

Mary L. Dunjak Penabaker passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at Serene Gardens. Mary was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 6, 1930 to Stella and Steve Dunjak. When she was two the family moved to the melting pot of Flint where she graduated from Central High School in 1948. Mary loved being a Mom, her extended family, and making birthdays and holidays special. She was known for her cookies (Christmas cookies especially), potato salad, pies, and Easter brunch. Her flair for decorating was inspiring. Mary was firm in her convictions and not afraid to share them. Twenty-eight of her letters to the editor were published in The Flint Journal and she was asked by the Journal to be a guest writer appearing on the front page in July 2005. She returned to work at GM SPO later in life and earned her Associate in Applied Science - Business Data Processing from Mott Community College. Mary participated in the CRIM for many years until her knee gave out; volunteered at FIM and the McLaren Auxiliary where she made many friends. She was a member of St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church, the SNJP Lodge and Croatian Club. Mary travelled extensively with her lifelong friend, Marie. One of the highlights of her travels was visiting Croatia where her Mother was born and meeting several cousins. She also connected with cousins in California who provided more information on the family history which she compiled and shared with her children, sisters and their families.

Mary is survived by her daughters Cynthia (Steve) Nelson, Celeste (Terry) Creger, son Scott (Sun) Penabaker and nieces and nephews that were dear to her. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Steve Dunjak, sisters Nina Stimac, Ann Luketich and Katie Miller.

Our deep appreciation goes to the compassionate care given to her at Serene Gardens, and by her Swan Hospice Team; to Kathy and Bob from St. Roberts for their kind spiritual support; and Wahnetah.

Visitation will take place Tuesday, November 26, 2024 from 9:30am-11am at St. Robert Catholic Church, 310 N Cherry St, Flushing, MI 48433, followed by mass at 11:00am.
