Richard was born in Flint, MI on August 19, 1946, son of the late Ivan and Lenora (Ketterer) Powell. He was a proud graduate of Kearsley High School, Class of 1965, where his passion for sports shone brightly as a member of the Varsity Baseball Team. Following his graduation, Richard answered the call to serve his country with honor and distinction, proudly donning the uniform of the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1967. In 1986, Richard found the love of his life, Joyce Hunt, and their union was a testament to the power of love and serendipity, having initially crossed paths through the pages of the Flint Journal Companion Column. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Richard was a devoted member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, where his faith and compassion touched the lives of many. Known affectionately as "Hollywood" at GM, Richard dedicated 30 years of his life to his work, retiring in 1995 with a legacy of hard work and dedication. Beyond his professional pursuits, Richard had a zest for life that was infectious. Whether he was studying the intricacies of meteorology, enjoying the serenity of chopping wood, casting his line into the waters while fishing, or tending to his beloved garden, Richard embraced each moment with enthusiasm and joy. However, Richard's greatest joy came from spending time with his cherished family. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, a doting grandfather, and a proud great-grandfather. His presence brought warmth and light to every family gathering, creating memories that will be treasured for generations to come.
Richard is survived by his wife, Joyce Powell; son, Jeremy Powell; 6 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Billie Powell; 5 siblings, Kenneth (Jan) Powell, David (Beth) Powell, Judith (Bob) Lawler, Keith (Rachelle) Powell and Karen Powell; sister-in-law, Jackie Powell; many other loving family members and good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Lenora Powell; son, Richard “Rick” (Dawn) Powell Jr. and brother, James Powell.
