BATES, Brian L. – of Clio, age 58, died Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 3 PM Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at the O'Guinn Family Funeral Home in Clio. Bard McClanahan officiating. Cremation to follow. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 1-8PM and on Wednesday from 11AM until time of services at 3PM. Contributions may be made to the family.
Brian was born August 13, 1958 in Flint to Thomas and Shirley (Seeley) Bates. He was a Clio resident the past 16 years. He was a 1976 graduate of Swartz Creek High School. Brian married Kim Witter on June 14, 1980. Mr. Bates retired from Flint Truck and Bus February 2008 with 30 years seniority. He was a member of the UAW Local #598 and the Secord Lake Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #4121. Brian enjoyed fishing, going up north, playing horseshoes and the lottery.
Surviving are: Wife, Kim; Children: Nicole Bates, Scott Bates, all of Clio; Grandchildren: Bailey Bates, Marissa Alles-Bates, Makia Noland, Jordan Leggewie; Mother, Shirley Kelly of Davison; Siblings: Marian Miller of Clio, Julie (Scott) Shifflett of Clio, Doug Bates of Flint; Mother-in-law, Viola Witter of Mt. Morris; Sisters-in-law: Kelly "The Broom" Higgins of Clio, Roxanne (Tim) Long of Gladwin, Denise (Pat) Whaley of Clio, Beverly (Dan) Feckovic of Oscoda; several nieces and nephews. Brian was preceded in death by: Father, Thomas Bates; Brother, Tom Bates, Jr.; Stepfather, Richard Kelly; and Father-in-law, Duane Witter.
