Wilda Jean Hopkins, age 90, of Davison, Beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away on Wednesday May 6, 2015 at Genesys Regional Medical Center Surrounded by her family. Wilda and her twin were born in Davison Michigan on December 7, 1924 the daughter of Arley and Ileth Watson. She is survived by six of her eight children, Virginia (Charles) McCord, Donald (Deborah) Hopkins Jr., Karen Hopkins, Denise (Dan) Heath, Cheryl (Thomas) Farver, and Patricia (Thomas) Halligan, and Mary Ann Adamczyk (wife of deceased son David Hopkins).Wilda is also survived by fifteen grandchildren: Laura Hall, Donald Hopkins III and Holly Hopkins, Behn and Emily Tubman, Jennifer Renfrow, Megan Farver, David and Frank Hopkins, Jeremy Halligan, Alicia Lewis, Nicole, Tony, Celeste and Alec Gomez: and eight great grandchildren; Emma, Benjamin, and Rebecca Hall, London Tubman, Samuel and Henry Renfrow, Marie and Thomas Halligan. Wilda was preceded in death by two sons; David and Richard Hopkins. as well as her parents Arley and Ileth Watson and sisters Wilma Dolezel (her twin) and Mary Monagin.
Wilda graduated from Davison High School in 1943. She was a graduate of General Motors Institute with a focus on office management. During World War II Wilda supported the war effort at the General Motors AC Plant working on bomb sights. She spent many years working at home raising, loving and caring for her eight children. During that time Wilda became an accomplished seamstress making beautiful garments for her children. She also spent time as a Brownie Leader and a Sunday School Teacher. Wilda was a faithful servant to Jesus and attended St. Dunstan Episcopal Church in Davison and Grace Episcopal Church in Lapeer. She was active in her religion through participation in Daughter of the King, Lay Reading, and Bible Study groups. Wilda volunteered at the Grace Episcopal Clothes Closet. She also knitted and donated numerous hats and mittens for church bazaars. In 1966 Wilda added employment to her daily duties beginning with a position as a book keeper at Wickes Lumber in Davison. She was employed there for sixteen years. Wilda also was employed by Genesee County Health Department working in the WIC Program for eight years.
After retirement Wilda enjoyed traveling with family and friends. She took trips to Europe and enjoyed traveling the continental United States. Wilda also enjoyed membership in the Davison Business Women’s Club and was president for one year. She belonged to various book clubs and the Davison Red Hats. Wilda was a board member for Braidwood Manor, Taeckens Terrace and Ballard village senior residences; serving in the position of secretary on the board. She enjoyed knitting and visiting with her family. Wilda was a life-long Detroit Tiger fan and rarely missed a televised game.
Wilda will be greatly missed by her family and friends, and those desiring may make contributions in her memory to Juvenile Diabetes Society, Lungevity, or the American Heart Association. The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to Dr. James Walter and his colleagues for their kind and devoted health care. Special thanks to the wonderful nurses, techs, and maintenance providers at Genesys for her care during the last months of her life.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday May 9, 2015 at St. Dunstan Episcopal Church 1523 N. Oak Rd Davison. Rev. Sue Colavenzo officiating, burial will follow at Flint Memorial Park. Family will receive visitors from 1-3 and 5-8pm Friday at the funeral home. Wilda will lie in state from 10:00 am Saturday until time of services at the church.
