Frye, II, Marvin Gene, of Flushing, age 63, died Friday, April 19, 2024, at his home. Funeral service will be Friday, April 26 at 1 p.m. at Rossell Funeral Home in Flushing, Michigan. Visitation will be Thursday, April 25 4-8 p.m. Cremation will follow the funeral service. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or The Veterans of Foreign Wars Foundation.
Marvin Gene Frye II, known to all as Gene, was born in Flint, Michigan on August 2, 1960, the son of Marvin and Dorothy (Boone) Frye. He married the love of his life, Deanna Olney at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Flint on July 15, 1987. Gene was a dedicated father who loved his wife, kids, grandsons, family and friends with his whole heart.
Professionally, Gene excelled as an executive chef for over 15 years at renowned establishments in Tempe, Arizona, and the Detroit area, including Ivy’s in the Park and Fox and Hound. Later, Gene had a career reset that allowed him to be actively involved in his kids’ childhood. He taught his kids how to play chess and he loved playing scrabble and trivia and watching movies and Jeopardy with his wife in his down time.
Gene had a myriad of interests – he was a huge history buff and fascinated by the Vietnam War. He enjoyed listening to Santana, Jackson Browne, Neil Young and more classic rock. He cheered passionately for Detroit sports – he attended many Tigers opening days with his friend Lenny, he’d text his sister Dar throughout Lions games and he loved chatting about the Red Wings with his son-in-law Paul. He appreciated the great outdoors through hunting and fishing, and loved working in his yard and vegetable garden. He also had a creative spirit, enjoying sketching, woodworking and baking incredible pies. He will be remembered for his kind heart and his willingness to lend a helping hand or a listening ear whenever needed. His absence leaves a void that cannot be filled.
Gene is survived by his wife of 36 years, Deanna; children, Jenna Frye and husband Paul Sholly; GJ Frye; grandchildren, Logan Robert Sholly, Noah Gene Sholly; mother, Dorothy Frye and Larry; sisters, Darlynn and husband Ron Frederick, Pamela and husband Bob Plath, Brenda Frye; sister-in-law, Brigit Howe; best friend of over 43 years, Matt Farver; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Frye; and beloved dogs, Buck and Sienna.
