GIACALONE, Victor (Bill) – Of Flushing, age 96, died Saturday, October 28, 2017 at Fostrian Manor after a short illness.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday, November 4, 2017 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 2415 Bagley Street, Flint, Father Thomas Firestone officiating.

Burial in New Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Those desiring may make contributions to St. John Vianney Church, North End Soup Kitchen or Genesee Health System (formerly Genesee County Mental Health Services).

Visitation 5-8 p.m. Thursday and 1-8 p.m. Friday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road.

A Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Giacalone will be at the church from 9 a.m. Saturday until the time of the Mass.

Victor was born in Flint, MI on June 3, 1921, the son of James Vincenzo and Vitina Matteralla Giacalone, and was a resident of the Flint and Flushing areas most of his life.

He married Joan M. McDonald, the love of his life, at St. Michael’s Church on September 14, 1943 in Flint.

He proudly served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II as an electronic instructor. He graduated from General Motors Institute with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1948 and was employed as a product engineer at Buick Motor Division for 40 years, retiring in 1981, as well as holding a brief position in 1957-58 as an engineer for the Greyhound Bus Company in Chicago, IL.

Mr. Giacalone was a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers. He served as a member of the Genesee County Mental Health Board, on the Executive Board of the Michigan Association of Community Mental Health Boards, and the Executive Board of the Michigan Association of Community Mental Health Boards.

He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church for many years and currently a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church.

Mr. Giacalone was a very devoted and loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. Surviving are his children, Carol Ann Freeman of Flint, Victor James of Flint, Lynne Marie (Rick) Church of Traverse City and James Benedict (Rose) of Ann Arbor;

10 grandchildren, Timothy (Melissa) Freeman, Michael (Perry Compton) Freeman, Rebecca (Brian) Spratke, Jonathan Freeman, Sam and Jackson Church, Robert (Kayla) Giacalone, Christopher Giacalone, Giuseppe and Antonio Giacalone; 8 great grandchildren; sisters-in law Irene Haenke, Paula McDonald, Catherine Nolan, Jeanette Livingston and brother-in law Roderick (Sharron) McDonald and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan, in 2001; his parents; 3 brothers, Samuel, Benedict and Michael; sisters, Vincenza, Virginia, Dora; father and mother-in-law, Roderick and Mary Jane McDonald.
