Jones, Mr. Sylvester of Otisville age-84 passed away Friday July 22, 2013 at Briarwood Manor. Memorial services will be held at 11am Friday August 2, 2013 from the Seventh Day Adventist Church, G-1379 Louis Ave, Flint. Pastor Famous Murray officiating. Family hour 10am. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Autism Research Institute. Mr. Sylvester Jones was born June 11, 1929 in Flint, Michigan the son of the late Eli and Helen (Dixon) Jones. The family moved to Otisville, Mi when he was 11yrs. old. Sylvester was a member of the Fairhaven Seventh Day Adventist Church Family attending the Fairhaven Seventh Day Adventist Elementary School and graduating from Mt. Morris High School. Sylvester attended the HBC-Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama. He was inducted into the US Army during the Korean conflict, afterwards attending Flint Jr. College. Sylvester completed his formal education earning a B.S. in Civil Engineering at Detroit’s Lawrence Tech and his Masters in Urban Planning at Wayne State University.
In 1991 he retired from HUD as a General Maintenance Engineer. Following his retirement he worked many years as a Modernization Coordinator for several Michigan Housing Commissions.
Sylvester was a loving and dedicated son, husband, father, brother and grandfather. He was a man of God with a general and kind heart who loved doing crossword puzzles, playing Scrabble and Monopoly with his family and also an avid Pistons’ fan with a “passion” for the game of basketball.
He leaves to cherish his memory: loving wife, Deborah Jones; son, Leland Jones; 3 daughters, Theresa and Karen Jones of Detroit; and Felecia Dennis of Flint; 3 sisters, Vera Miller, Lottie M. Harris, and Esther (Edward) Mattox of Otisville ,Mi; mother-in-law, Minnie Ray; 3 sisters-in-law Betty ( Douglas ) Johnson all of Dothan, Al, Pamela ( Kelvin ) McGhee of Pensacola, Fl and Karen Smith of Dothan, Al.; 3 brothers-in-law, George (Minnie) Stevens of Detroit, Mi, Steve ( Chong ) Ray of Jessup, Md and James ( Theresa ) Ray of Canton, Ga.; 6 grandchildren and one great grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including his Fairhaven Seventh Day Adventist Family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Helen Friend, Gwendolyn Smith, Ruby Jones, and Pauline Taylor; brother, Alexander Jones.
The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. P. Khandelwal, the staff of Willowbrook and Briarwood Manors, Pastor Famous Murray and the Fairhaven Seventh Day Adventist Church Family, and faithful friends Mary Primeau and Johnny Miller for their love, care and support.
