Robert Duane Smith

Born: 7/7/1950
Died: 3/16/2025
Age: 74
Community: Bancroft, MI

Robert Duane Smith, age 74, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Midland and raised in Hemlock, Michigan, Robert grew up in a warm and supportive home with his mother and four siblings. As the eldest, he paved the way for his two brothers and two sisters, setting an example for them to follow.

From a young age, Robert understood the value of hard work. At 18, he began his career with General Motors, where he dedicated 30 years of service before retiring. However, slowing down was never in his nature. Throughout his retirement, he remained active, taking on various roles—working at a lumber yard until its closure, then at Walmart, ZF North America, and ultimately, Bishop Airport, where he found his final role.

In his early adult life, Robert—known as Rob to his family and Bob to his friends—moved to Bancroft, where he remained for the rest of his life. There, he raised his daughter and formed lifelong friendships with his neighbors. His family would often say that once Robert met someone, they were considered a friend for life.

He found joy in simple pleasures like fishing and gardening, with a particular talent for growing tomatoes. He took great pride in canning them for homemade salsa, a tradition he cherished. Later in life, he met and married Betty, who introduced him to his love of travel—especially to the Philippines.

Through all of life’s adventures, one thing never changed: his deep love for family. He never missed a big family Christmas at his mother’s house, even if his relatives had to fib about the dinner time—he was never on time! But one thing was certain: you could always count on him to bring the pickles and olives.

Robert is survived by the love of his life, wife, Betty; his daughters, Amy (Eric) Sanderson and Lovey Ruze; his sister, Gloria (James) Richardson; and his brother, Ben Card. He was a proud grandfather to Nathan and Aiden. He also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews, and cherished lifelong friends, including Harold Burkhart and Bill Schornick.

Robert’s memories, adventures, jokes, and the warmth of his smile and laughter will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Robert was proceeded in death by his mom, Norma Mae Card; sister, Marleigh Ann (Donnie); and brother, Frank (Joyce) Card.

Celebration of life will be at the Event Center in McCurdy Park in Corunna on May 31st, 2025 from 4-8pm.
