Elder, Barbara Ann (Borey) of Flushing, age 84, died Friday, July 3, 2015, at her home. A celebration of her life will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 11, 2015, at the Signature Chophouse in Flushing. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Flushing Presbyterian Church or the Flushing Christian Outreach Center.
Barbara was born in Flint, Michigan on December 7, 1930, the daughter of Lewis “Joe” and Edna (Anderson) Borey. She attended Garfield Elementary, Emerson Jr. High and Northern High School in Flint. While at Garfield Elementary, during World War II, the students sent packages to war-torn England through the Red Cross. Those children sent thank you notes for the packages and Barbara started a back and forth writing duet with Jean Bredonchel that has lasted 74 years. At the age of 15, Barbara started as Drum Majorette with the American Buick #310 Drum and Bugle Corps and traveled to competitions all over the United States.
She married David Charles Elder on June 14, 1947, and they had three sons and a daughter. David preceded her in death on February 21, 2010. During the 62 years of their marriage, Barbara first became an LPN and then achieved her RN status. She worked at Flint Osteopathic Hospital for 23 years. After retiring from FOH, she worked at the Argentine Care Center, also for Dr. Kage and Dr. Lloyd, and the Genesee County Health System. She also taught Nursing Assistant classes.
Barbara and her husband both volunteered at Genesys Hospital. She was a life member of the Eastern Star and was a founding member of Flushing Presbyterian Church.
Left to remember her are, sons, David Jr. and wife Sheri Elder, Keith (Mark Dennison) Elder, Marc and wife Kim Elder; daughter, Valerie Elder; grandchildren, David Elder, III, Kendra (Tim) Davis, Ben (Terri) Elder, Katie (fiance, Justin Althuis) Elder, Samantha (fiance, John Hirzel) Allred, Alexis Allred; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Ernestine Coffron of Bay City; sister-in-law, Arline Hiller of Houghton Lake; lifelong friends, Helen Sutkowi of Fenton; Jean Bredonchel of Jersey, Channel Islands; and several nieces and nephews. Barbara was also preceded in death by her brother, Wayne Borey in 1994.
