HAYES, William (Bill) S. – of Davison, MI and Sun City, FL, age 87, passed away February 17, 2017. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 2 PM Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 404 N. Dayton St., Davison; Rev. Fr. Andrew A. Czajkowski celebrant. Cremation will follow the Mass. Visitation will be 4-8 PM Monday at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd., Davison and one hour prior to the Mass on Tuesday at the church.
Bill was born in Flint, MI on August 5, 1929, son of the late John and Gabriel (VanBuren) Hayes. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. Bill graduated from the University of Michigan in 1951 where he was active in the Newman Club and ROTC. He married Dorothy (Dot) Zimmer from Port Huron in 1957. Bill retired from AC Spark Plug as an engineer after 31 years of service. He ran in 38 consecutive Crim 10 mile races, of which he was very proud. Bill also ran in two marathons and several half marathons, with his most recent at 80 years old. He was a lifelong tennis player and played in several leagues, especially the AC Tennis League. In recent years, he played several times a week at Abernathy Park with his Davison tennis friends. Bill took his family to visit all 48 contiguous states, visiting the last two with Dot. He and Dot also went on many cruises and bike trips, exploring around the world.
Bill is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Zimmer) Hayes; children, Bill (Norma) Hayes, Jr., Tom (Sherry) Hayes, Jim (Susan) Hayes, Kathy Hayes; He was a proud grandparent to 11 grandchildren. Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Barb Nasberg; brother, Gerry Hayes; great-grandchild, Hope Moon.
