ESSINGER, Reverend Jerome D. - Of Swartz Creek, age 92, died Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 26, 2019 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint.
Burial in Great Lakes National Cemetery at 10 a.m. Monday, April 29, 2019.
Visitation 4-7 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 2019 and 10 a.m. Friday, April 26, 2019 until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Jerome was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 14, 1926.
On May 23, 1953, he married Agnes Schaad in Riverside, Illinois and she preceded him in death on November 20, 2011. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Swartz Creek, Michigan.
Jerome was a WWII Veteran in the United States Navy. He was an alumnus of Capital University and Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, Ohio. Before entering the seminary he played semi-pro baseball for Harlan, Kentucky Smokies.
His first parish was Grace Lutheran in Luckey, Ohio, where he served for 12 years before moving to Marine City, Michigan, serving St. Paul Lutheran for 19 years. He then became the chaplain at the Luther Home of Mercy in Toledo, Ohio for seven years before retiring.
Jerome loved his family and friends, jazz music, baseball, playing cards, studying the Holy Scriptures and above all else, his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Surviving are children, Paul and wife Jil-Anne Essinger of Munising, Michigan, Laura and husband Stephen Hockin of Swartz Creek, Michigan, Jane and husband Duane Bradford of Kent, Ohio, Ruth and husband Ron Meyer of Savoy, Illinois;
grandchildren, Josh (Tiffany) Hockin, Sarah (Andrew) Granger, Jenny(Jordan) Dieck, Rachel Hockin, Sean (Kara) Bradford, Matt, Abby and Libby Bradford, Zach, Luke and Jake Meyer;
great-grandchildren, Easton, Owen, Trevor, Ellie, Lauren, Jackelyn and Gavin;
many nieces, nephews, other relatives and special friends.
The family would like to thank the wonderful people at Swank Assisted Living in Swartz Creek for their love and care of their beloved Dad/Grandpa/Great Baba.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Messiah Lutheran Church of Swartz Creek.
