Chester Jacob “Chet” Grifka, 77, of Durand, passed away on Friday, August 17, 2018.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:30 AM Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Durand. Visitation Tuesday at Nelson-House Funeral Home, Owosso from 2 pm to 8 pm with the rosary prayed at 7 pm.
Chet was born in Bad Axe, Michigan on December 2, 1940, to August and Theresa (Osentoski) Grifka. He attended Ubly High School, and joined the railroad upon graduation.
He married the love of his life, Sylvia Sovis, on November 24, 1973, and was later with blessed with two lovely daughters.
Chet worked for Grand Trunk Western Railroad for 42 years, retiring as a Train Dispatcher.
He was also a member of the Army National Guard for six years.
Chet is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Sylvia, of Durand; daughters Shelly Grifka of Belleville and Colleen (Brian) Buda of Brighton; two beloved granddaughters, his little shining stars, Madison and Alyssa Buda; brothers Euguene (Dorothy) Grifka of Bad Axe, Virgil Grifka of Mussey Township, and Duane (Connie) Grifka of Bad Axe; sisters Elaine Feige of Romeo and Judy (Terry) Sheridan of Warren; brothers-in-law, Tony (Eloise) Sovis of Montrose and Tom (Jan) Sovis of New Lothrop; and sisters-in-law Helen (Fred) Malik of Hilton Head Island (SC), Mary Chris Bull of Bluffton (SC), and Patricia (Gary) McNeill of Whitmore Lake; many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He is predeceased by his parents, August and Theresa Grifka; brothers Raymond and George; sister Geraldine Briolat; brothers-in-law Jim Bull and Eugene Briolat; and nephew Dennis Grifka.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Durand, or to Easter Seals.
