Leo J. Lyon

Born: 9/29/1955
Died: 10/1/2016
Age: 61
Community: Flushing Township, MI

LYON, Leo J, of Flushing Township Age 61, passed away at home Saturday, October 1, 2016 doing what he does often, waiting on his son to get around. He is survived by that son, Brad Leo Lyon, and various other family members he would see once or twice a year outside of funerals. I would share with you what he did for a living, like most obituaries do, but if our profession is somehow a good reflection of who we are as a person then I’m not sure why any of us are even here in the first place. Who he was is a loving husband who tirelessly rubbed the feet of his wife before bed every night. He was a father who never missed a sports event of his son’s prep career, give or take a Saturday wrestling tournament because, honestly, those do get pretty boring. He was a great business partner, who retired from his own career in order to run a Minor League sports team with his son for nearly a decade. Then, when that son would discard one career like a five-year-old would an old toy, he likewise helped him run a movie studio up until his very last days. He enjoyed going on three-day road trips that turn into a month, driving his brand new car he got for his birthday two days prior to his death, and watching the Detroit Lions play football. If he was writing this he’d probably give them a special shout out for beating the Colts on September 11. That was the only opening season away game he ever saw in person and the win turned a rained out road trip to Put-In-Bay, Ohio into a trip to Indianapolis and one of the best days of both of our lives. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 40 years, JoAnn Lyon, whom if still here would be yelling at me for waiting until the last minute to write this obituary. Sorry mom. Viewing will be held Thursday, October 6 from 2:30 – 3:30 PM for Family and 3:30 – 8 PM for everyone, which means come any time since he considered everyone family. Funeral services will be Friday, October 7 at 1 PM; both visitation and funeral services will be held at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 W Hill Road, Flint MI. In lieu of flowers… actually go ahead and send flowers, he kind of liked them. Otherwise, just do something nice for someone without asking them. If they ask why, tell them Leo sent you. Meanwhile, if you happen to be the Detroit Lions reading this, I won’t ask for a Super Bowl win because that might be a stretch. But if ol’ Mathew happens to throw another touchdown this season ask him to look up and say this one’s for Leo “the” Lion. He always rooted for you guys. Why you ask? Because that’s just the kind of guy he was, loyal and passionate through the good times and bad, even if the bad means 59 years without a championship.
