Allan was born on March 16, 1936 in Detroit, Michigan to William and Marguerite Davis (Schnekenburger). He grew up in Detroit and graduated from Redford High School in 1955. He graduated from Albion College in 1959, and received a Juris Doctorate degree from Detroit College of Law in 1962. Al worked for General Motors Corporation in Personnel and Labor Relations for 30 years, retiring in 1992. After his retirement from GM, he practiced law with the firm of Collins and Blaha, PC in Southfield, MI and was an Adjunct Professor of labor law at Cooley Law School. Allan received recognition in 2012 from the Michigan Supreme Court for his 50 years as a member of the Michigan State Bar.
Al was a devoted member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and was the church’s Treasurer ex-officio. He served on the Tuesday lunch ministry and was known as the “juice man.”
Allan generously gave his time and talents to his church, charities and the community. From 1975 to 2015 he was on the Advisory Board for the Salvation Army in Flint and Syracuse, NY and was presented with the “Hands of Mercy Award” by the Salvation Army of Flint in 1988. He was a patient advocate with Citizens for Better Care for several years.
Allan valued public education and was a member of the Grand Blanc Community Schools’ Board of Education for seven years and participated in the Opinion Leaders focus group.
Allan was an avid golfer and loved the game. He was always practicing, playing or watching golf and played St. Andrews and Gleneagles in Scotland which was a special memory for him. He was a fan of all Detroit sports teams and watched or listened to most Lions, Tigers, Red Wings and Pistons games. He was a huge Spartan fan too, always wearing the green and white proudly.
While at Albion College, Allan was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. The memories and lifelong friendships were cherished and he looked forward to the Albion Delt reunion at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island each June.
As a history buff and one who kept up with current affairs and politics, Al was always reading. Al was a frequent visitor of the library, and could often be found sitting on his front porch reading historical non-fiction. Teddy Roosevelt was his favorite. He enjoyed visiting with his coffee clutch guys at Dawn Donuts talking about everything under the sun. Having grown up and worked in the City of Detroit, his love of the city had been energized in recent years. At Christmas time, he and Carole went with his son’s family to the Detroit Foundation Hotel, which used to house one of the city’s fire stations. He was able to tour the hotel and see the Chief’s office where he negotiated contracts with the firefighters when he worked for the city. It was a very special trip down memory lane.
Allan is survived by his loving wife, Carole, his children Beth Davis of Fenton and Matthew (Brenda) Davis of Rochester, and step-daughters Julie Meek of Boca Raton, FL and Meredith (Eric) Scott of Grand Blanc. He had four beautiful granddaughters, Ally Davis, Maddie Davis, Jessica Meek, Miranda Scott, and great-granddaughter, Aubrey Manning. He is also survived by his loving sister, Jane (Albert) Demmerle of Novi, former wife, Sharon Davis, and many friends with whom he shared such special memories.
