GERALD DANIEL PHELPS

July 3, 1950 – April 29, 2018

Gerald Daniel Phelps (Dan) was born in Huntington, West Virginia on July 3, 1950. In 1955 his family moved to Montrose Michigan. He graduated in 1968 and joined the Army in December 1968. He was stationed at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville Alabama at the Space Flight Center until 1971. He started his apprenticeship with Pipefitters Local 370 in 1974 and was employed for ten years. In 1984 he was hired by General Motors Truck and Bus where he retired in 2008.

On September 2, 1989, he married his wife, Theresa, in Flushing, MI. Dan had a passion for everything he did in life and loved his wife and family. He loved working with his hands. He was an accomplished long-distance runner for many years, running in many marathons including the Boston Marathon three times. He was an avid fly fisherman and enjoyed his retirement spending time at the log cabin he built on the Manistee River in Grayling. He was also an avid golfer and enjoyed spending the winters in Florida and building golf clubs for himself, friends and family. Dan loved life and always wanted to have fun, no matter what it was. He loved the outdoors and throughout his life enjoyed running, backpacking, skiing, motorcycle racing with his family, hunting, fly fishing, golfing and working in his garage. He was very musically talented, playing guitar in a bluegrass band for many years. He and Theresa enjoyed dancing and singing karaoke at local establishments around the area and with friends at the Fraternal Order of Eagles Club, where they had been members for years.

Surviving are his wife, Theresa L. Phelps; daughters Darrah Dorman of Kalamazoo, MI; Amber Roberts (Brandon) of Clio, MI; son Travis Phelps (Renate) of Spokane, WA; step-sons Justin Lackney of Flushing, MI and Christopher Lackney of Flushing, MI; sister Sharon Cheffer of San Diego, CA; brother Jim Phelps (Janice) of Corunna, MI; and sister-in-law Kim Vance of Montrose, MI; 11 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Betty Phelps; daughter, Shanna Phelps; brother David Vance; and nephew Joseph Phelps.

A Celebration of Life Memorial will be held at the Montrose Eagles #4090, 11416 Vienna Rd., Montrose, MI 48457 on Sunday, September 2, 2018 at 4:00 pm.
