Richard Earl Sleeseman

Born: 5/3/1930
Died: 2/21/2018
Age: 87
Community: Owosso, MI

Long time retired DPW worker, Richard E. Sleeseman, 87, of Owosso, passed away peacefully at Pleasant View in Corunna on Wednesday, February 21, 2018.

Dick led a very adventurous life. He started work at the City of Corunna DPW on February 3, 1947 at the age of 17, he worked his way up to be the head foreman there. After several years he would learn that his lack of education would interfere with his employment, so he left the City of Corunna and became a legend of his own. Dick taught himself the “tricks of the trade,” he became skilled in many areas and landed several jobs, everything from factory work to construction work and anything in between. He took a job with the Village of Byron DPW as head foreman, but left there after several years to start his own business, Sleeseman Excavating. Dick moved back to Owosso from Byron in 2001. Dick accomplished a lot in his life, even though he had very little reading and writing skills.

Dicks family and friends will remember him as somewhat of a daredevil. Dick loved to work on cars, and would modify anything that could move, he drove race cars at the Owosso Speedway, and built his children a working wooden ferris wheel in the backyard.

Dick is survived by his children; Rick (Terri) Sleeseman, Edd (Paul) Sleeseman, and Jo Lawrenz, his daughter in-law, Robin Sleeseman. His five granddaughters; Tonya (Bob) Riddle, Julie Davis, Sara Sleeseman, Courtney (Justin) Johnson, and Melissa Sleeseman. Also his five great-grandchildren, his first wife Beverly Graim, and his ex-wife, friend, and caregiver, Judy Horton.

He was preceded in death by his son, James Sleeseman, daughter, Susan Sleeseman, and his brother, Max Sleeseman.

A memorial service to honor and celebrate his life will be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at 1pm at the Historical Church in McCurdy Park, Pastor John Walworth will officiate, with burial to follow in Pine Tree Cemetery, Corunna. A luncheon will follow the burial at the Community Center in the park.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in Dicks name are suggested to McCurdy Park, checks payable to the City of Corunna.
