The blessed man, child of God, known as Harold Edward Evans made his transition to the next phase of his eternal life at 4:35 p.m. January 2, 2013. He began this life experience at 12:30 p.m. April 23, 1927 in Lincoln Hospital in the Detroit area, the son of Mary Esther Keenoy Evans and Harold J. Evans. He was blessed to be raised to adulthood together with his beloved sister, Dorothy Faye (now Mrs. Earl C. Mix living in Arizona), by a remarkable Mother of outstanding nurturing and parenting skills, who was a joy to know and a person of great wit and wisdom. She taught her children, and others, to accept responsibility for all of their actions, that no one ever had to do anything they didn’t want to do—there was always a choice; that they should live life knowing that all was in divine order and life itself was worthwhile. Mr. Evans was grateful that he grew up in Detroit, Michigan when the quality of life was unbelievably good--- a community of a great school system (MacFarlane and Fairbanks Elementary, Hutchins Intermediate, Cass Technical High) of beautiful parks and well stocked libraries within walking distance from wherever one dwelled; with a street transportation system that was enviable, museums and free concerts. A city of trees and caring citizens!
Some thought of him as a raconteur, essayist, community leader, activist in the arts, a reader of the Saginaw Talking Newspaper for 30 years, or one who never let a chance to go by to give or to receive a full frontal hug. There was a joy of living in Harold. He had an infectious laugh and loved to laugh. He met every challenge in his life with dignity, grace and faith. His reply to a helping hand was “if it gives you pleasure.” It was said:”he has a unique style that is incredibly charming.”
He counted among his blessings his strong belief in his unlimited God as taught by Jesus of Nazareth and interpreted by the founders of the Unity School of Practical Christianity and such teachers as James Dillet Freeman, Eric Butterworth and Aeola James. He was blessed with a loving wife, Patricia Mae Persons Willy, whom he married March 28, 1982; a job (of 42 years at Second National Bank-Citizens) he enjoyed, made so by those he worked with; four children—D’Lorah Ann, M’Liss Lorraine, David Keenoy, (all of Texas) and Craig Edward and his loving wife, Caroline; grandchildren, Nolan Patrick, Hudson Joseph and Margaret Frances (now of Traverse City); caring friends, relatives and neighbors.
He was proud to be an American, enlisting at 17, in the U. S. Navy, being sworn in on April 12, 1945, before obtaining sufficient credits to graduate from High School. For the most part he was stationed at the Naval Hospital in Guam, serving as the Captain’s Scribe, achieving the rate of PhM 3/c before his honorable discharge late December 1946. IN early 1947 he was admitted to the University of Michigan where he obtained his BBA degree in 27 months of schooling. During college years he did go back and pick up sufficient credits to obtain his high school diploma. In later years he graduated from the BAI Institute at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J. In addition he became a 2nd Lt. in the Civil Air Patrol, an affiliation he made while taking flying lessons at Harry Browne Airport.
He was most grateful for the positions of trust he was given and by many honors he was granted. Those interested further, his biographical sketches appear in various directories from 1968 on, including Who’s Who in America.
Most of all he enjoyed his life and asks that no sad songs be sung for him. He tried to live life fully always understanding that his relationship to others was more important than the trappings of success. He knew that he was a spiritual being having a life experience. He accepted without doubt that the soul dwelled in the breath and as a consequence was pro-choice in all matters. As a member of management he felt an obligation to help others to achieve their highest potential, and he believed that each citizen has an obligation to pay rent to their community with service to others. At his leaving he was member and past Chairman of HealthSource Saginaw Advisory Board, the Saginaw Hall of Fame, Torch Club and the Navy League. He would hope to be remembered as one who had a joy within him. His presence will be missed by all whose life he touched.
The body he cherished in this incarnation has been transferred to the University of Michigan Medical School under the body donor program. A celebration of Harold’s life will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 9, 2013 at the Horizon Conference Center, 6200 State St. Saginaw, MI. Rev. Greg Coles of the Unity of Bay City Spiritual Center will officiate. A memorial visitation will be held from 2:00-8:00 p.m. Friday February 8, 2013 at W. L. Case and Co. Funeral Chapel, 4480 Mackinaw Rd. Saginaw. Those who wish to memorialize Mr. Evans are asked to plant a Peony Bush a flowering tree that can be viewed from the street; or a memorial to Cartwright Care Residence, the Unity of Bay City Spiritual Center or HealthSource Saginaw.
Harold’s family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Joseph Osesterling and all the attending Doctors and Nursing staff at Covenant Cooper 3 North for their excellent care and loving concern. We would also like to thank the supporting staff of therapists, aides, housekeeping and nutritionists who gave support and care, the Hospice Coordinator who gave great comfort, to all of Harold’s health care physicians-- God bless you for helping him thru his many health challenges, to the health care facilities and staff at Health Source, Seton Cancer Center, Covenant Hospital, the home health care staff with Superior Home Health Care, Home Care Solutions, Visiting Nurse Association who were a great support team and became good friends. www.casefuneralhome.com
