Hawkins, Shirley C. of Flushing, age 91, died Tuesday, March 12, 2019, at her home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 15, 2019, at Court Street United Methodist Church in Flint, Michigan. Pastor Jeremy Peters will officiate. Burial will follow at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Flint. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Rossell Funeral Home in Flushing, Michigan. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Court Street United Methodist Church.
Shirley was born in Flint, Michigan on January 12, 1928, the daughter of Roy and Frances (Folsom) Stewart. She married Jack West Hawkins on June 9, 1952, in Flint. He preceded her in death on September 15, 1981. Shirley was a longtime and active member of Court Street United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school for over 40 years, playing the piano and organ and belonging to many choirs, including most recently, the Senior Choir. She was a Girl Scout Leader and 4H Leader. Shirley enjoyed crafts including ceramics, knitting and crocheting. She was an avid reader and enjoyed gardening. Shirley was so loving and kind and always put her family first.
She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia (Edward) Bates; grandchildren, Shane (Candice) Bates, Amber Sweeny, Chantel Bates, Elizabeth (Kane Parker) Bates; great-grandson, Kingston Bates; sisters, Maxine Smith, Madelyn Gothy, Sally Feldhaus, Darlene Upton; beloved niece and caregiver, Audrey and husband Richard Kleinedler; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Stanley Null and Sherry Trout. Shirley was also preceded in death by her grandson, Jacob Bates and siblings, Eloise Jordan, JoAnn Cox and LeRoy Stewart. |
