JOHNSTON, Charles Marshall – age 96 passed peacefully surrounded by family on May 23, 2016 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 from 5pm – 8pm at Hill Funeral Home – 11723 S. Saginaw St., Grand Blanc, MI 48439. Funeral Mass will be held on June 1, 2016 at 10:30am at Holy Family Catholic Church – 11824 S. Saginaw St., Grand Blanc, MI 48439 with Monsignor Jerry Vincke celebrating. Charles was born on September 23, 1919 to the late Robert and Laura (Fouchon) Johnston in Flint, Michigan. He was married to Virginia Woods for 47 years, until her passing in 1988. In 1993 he married Vivian Blackman. He spent many years active in the local golf community such as Flint Golf Club, Warwick Hills Country Club, and the past president of Atlas Valley Country Club. He was a longtime member of the Bolders Country Club in Carefree, AZ., past co-chairman of the Buick open, and chairman of the women’s Yankee professional tournaments in the Flint area. He retired in 1983 as Vice president of General Motors overseas service Parts Corporation, after a long career. In the early 1950’s as part of his GM career he pioneered, the first add-on air conditioned units for GM vehicles in warm climates. He was also one of the originators of the GM Mr. Goodwrench program. He was a member of Holy Family Church in Grand Blanc, MI. Mr. Johnston was a WWII veteran, staff Sargent in the Army Air Corp and was a turret gunner on B17 bomber stationed in England. Charles is survived by his wife: Vivian; son: Robert (Cheryl) Johnston; grandchildren: Robert (Mary) Johnston and Kristy (Joe) Somerville; great-grandchildren: Maggie, Bridget, Luke, and Jessika; and great-great-grandchild: Mason. He was preceded in death by his first wife: Virginia; parents: Robert and (Laura) Johnston.
