French, Virgil R. - of Shallotte, North Carolina, formerly of Flushing, age 88, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, September 24, 2017, in the Lower Cape Fear Hospice, "Brunswick House" in Bolivia, NC. The family will receive visitors at the O’Guinn Family Funeral Home in Clio on Saturday, September 30, 2017, from 9 AM to 11 PM. A graveside service, with full military honors, will follow at 12PM at the Flushing City Cemetery. Pastor Ron Emmerling officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the family to be directed to the Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Bolivia, NC "Haitian Mission Fund."
Virgil was born April 15, 1929, in Fitzpatrick, West Virginia to the late Rev. David W. and Ida Mae (Rankin) French. He married Juanita Ruth Meador on July 12, 1948. She preceded him in death on February 5, 1994. Virgil later married Audrey May Barres on April 7, 1996. She also preceded him in death on October 31, 2014. Virgil was retired from GM's Chevrolet Mfg. and served as a Union Representative for UAW Local 659 for many years. He was a longtime member of Riverdale Baptist Church in Flint and had served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons. Virgil moved to Shallotte, NC from Flushing in 1996, and began a very active life in the area. Virgil became a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, a Sunday School teacher, and was active in the youth ministry. He was also a Lay Minister thru the Lay Renewal Ministries of NC. Virgil's love of gospel music led him to sing in several traveling southern gospel quartets and he was a teacher in Shape Notes in southern, WV. Mr. French was also a proud U.S. Navy veteran having served during the Korean War.
Surviving are: Son, Gary (Kay) French of Carolina Shores, NC; Daughter, Beth (Rick) Whitman of Flushing, MI; 4 grandchildren: Michael W. French and wife Anne, Christine J. French, Jonathan Reynolds and wife LeeAnn, Andrew D. Olivarez; 5 great-grandchildren: Michael Derra, Tyler French, Malinda, Aspen and Malcolm Reynolds. Step-children: Wayne (Cheryl) Barres of Flint, Debra (Ed) Riggan of Miami, FL., Barbara (Larry) Miller of Bitely, MI., Andrea (Don) Burger of Lusby, MD.
