James was born in Flint, MI on June 23, 1928, son of the late Edgar and Julia (Thomas) Peters. He married Lila Park on June 26, 1949 in Otisville. James was a loving husband to his wife of 66 years. James and his wife Lila resided in Flint where they raised their seven children. He had a deep love for his God, family, and country. James accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior in 1960 at Grace Baptist Church in Flint. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family and worshipping at Community Baptist Church in Davison, which he helped build in 1970. James loved the church in which he served as deacon for many years, mowed the lawn faithfully, and helped in any way he could. In his spare time, James enjoyed farming, traveling, going to car races, and watching the Detroit Tigers.

James proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Japanese occupation following WWII. James worked very hard to provide for his family. He held two jobs during his working years. He worked for Chevrolet Motor Division for 32 years before retiring and also laid blocks as a mason. After retirement, he moved to Florida where he joined the church building program with Baptist Church Builders of North America. During his six years of church building service, he helped build several churches in many states. In 1998, James and his wife moved back to Michigan where they spent the rest of their days together. James will lovingly be remembered for his kind smile, laughter, giving spirit, strong work ethic, and faithfulness to God.

James is survived by his wife, Lila; six children, Diana LaValley, Donald (Birdena) Peters, Denise Miller and Nelson, Dwight (Terry) Peters, Dawn (Scott) Moe, Dorothy Gustafson; 20 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; siblings, Charles, Irene; sister in law, Nita; many nieces, nephews and extended family.
