Virginia was born in LaSalle, Illinois on April 16, 1923, the youngest of six children born to Nicholas and Jennie (Jurkas) Herakovich. She was a 1941, graduate of LaSalle-Peru High School, Illinois and a “Rosie the Riveter” during WWII. Virginia worked as a welder on ships at the Seneca, Illinois Shipyard. On July 10, 1945, she married her high school sweetheart and Navy sailor Dominick Corrado. They moved to Flint, Michigan and together raised four daughters and celebrated 54 years of marriage, before his death on January 7, 2000. Virginia cherished her Catholic faith, her family, and her friends. In Faith she lived her life, attentive to the teachings of the Church, prayerful in daily life and committed to passing these beliefs on to her daughters. In family she cherished those she came from in Illinois and those she raised and nurtured in Michigan. Her friends were any and all she came to know as she moved through life in various neighborhoods, parishes, and living facilities in her later years. She was an excellent homemaker, cook and baker, a friend to all she met and a happy, positive person throughout her entire life. She held various jobs outside the home including work at small factories in Flint as well as a few years at General Motors, AC-Spark Plug. In her later years, as family losses and health challenges occurred, Virginia showed the strength and resiliency of many of those of her Greatest Generation, never complaining and always smiling.
Surviving are daughters, Carla Corrado of Flushing, MI, Laurie Aure of Montrose CO, and Margo Cowper (Michael) of Haleiwa, Hawaii; five grandchildren, Christopher Bishop (Carol), Timothy Bishop (Melissa), Nicholas Sibilsky (Kelly Rivers), Morgan Cowper (David Steinbacher), and Maxine Forbes (Jeffrey Forbes); six great-grandchildren, Emma Bishop, Jack Bishop, Jessica Sandner (Tyler), Justin Bishop (Sarah), Jaden Bishop, and Jace Bishop; and two great-great grandchildren, Isla Sandner and Jaxon Sandner.; son-in-law, David Sibilsky; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Dominick; her daughter, Toni Sibilsky; her son-in-law, Dale Aure; her parents; and her siblings, Nick, Albert, Rudy, Jennie and Marie.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Landings of Genesee Valley and to Swan Hospice for their attentive care of Virginia, especially during these past few months.
