ENGSTROM, Hazel – Of Flint, age 97 died Monday, September 5, 2016 at Genesys Regional Medical Center, surrounded by family and just a week shy of her 98th birthday. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 8, 2016 at Lamb of God Lutheran Church 2051 West Maple Avenue in Flint, Reverend Paul M. Boerger officiating. Entombment at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road in Flint. Mrs. Engstrom will be at the church from 10a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. Hazel was born September 13, 1918 in Marinette, Wisconsin, the eldest of Stephen and Augusta Popelka's eight children. She met Willard Engstrom in Boulder Junction, Wisconsin, where they worked. They were married on April 12, 1939 in Flint. The couple returned to farm in northern Wisconsin before settling permanently in Flint and finding work in the booming automobile industry. She will be remembered for many things, but most who knew her will miss her meals. She was a fantastic cook who used her talent and overflowing recipe box to feed her big family and students at Redeemer Lutheran School and General Motors Institute. Family and friends will miss her homemade pies, noodles and sheets of cinnamon rolls. One of Hazel's great-grandchildren posted on Facebook that she "was a gift from heaven, whose purpose was to make this world understand what love, friendship, goodness and humbleness was all about. Goodness belongs to heaven, and I know Hazel is watching us from above, bestowing her beautiful smile upon us. May her soul rest in peace. I am so grateful to have had her in my life, the laughs, the stories and smiles will be forever remembered." She was a longtime member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Flint and later Lamb of God Lutheran Church in Flint. Hazel retired from Buick and spent her summers in Boulder Junction, winters in Merritt Island, Florida and the time in-between at her home in Flint. She was preceded in death by Willard, her husband of 75 years; her mother and father; brothers, Raymond Popelka and Wallace Popelka; sisters, Edna Popelka, Phyllis Popelka, Alice Seal and Helen Winters; son-in-law, Warren Carter; and daughter-in-law, Linda Engstrom. Hazel is survived by her daughter, Janet Carter of Lapeer; sons, Roger Engstrom of Lapeer and Michael Engstrom of Flint; sister, Joyce Hoffman of Merritt, Florida; brother Ken(Marcella)Popelka of White Lake, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Kim(Ted)Stephen of Fenton, Melissa(Bryce)Alford of Williamston, Roxanne(Don)Wyatt of Flint, Suzette(Bob)Trent of Milford, Matthew(Laura)Engstrom of Fort Worth, Texas, Jason(Cindy)Engstrom of Phoenix, Arizona, Chris(Jacqueline)Coseglia of San Pedro, California and Kim Coseglia of LaSalle, Colorado; great-grandchildren, Ryan Stephen, Austin Alford, Alexandra Alford, Dylan Wyatt, Sawyer Wyatt, Jenna Trent, Hunter Trent, Chase Engstrom, Evan Engstrom, Tyler Flaherty; and dozens of nieces and nephews. Special thanks to full-time caregiver, Michael Engstrom, who devoted his life to helping his parents live independently until their deaths. The family is forever grateful.
